I was posting this as general advice for anyone who is experiencing the same trouble I was. You probably don't even have the IPv6 USE flag set anyway.

For the record, things that also do not work:
* Upgrading to xorg-server-0.99.4-r2
* Not loading the dri module
* Disabling composite/render
* Going back to 2.6.14-gentoo

Idle still timing out, engine still infinitely resetting...

iotc247, widremann, what happens when you do this:

Code: Select all

# export XKEYSYMDB=/usr/share/X11/XKeysymDB #(give a correct path to the file!!)
# startx
Otherwise. Isn that file empty or something else very unlikely?

If I stuck that in the local.start file that would do it permanently until they fix that right? Because that did work perfectly.

If it worked, i think the environment var is set incorrectly by some script on your computer. So, it's not a bug.

Normally this environment variable isn't set at all and libX11 looks for XKeysymDB in the right place (it defaults to a working value here).
So, couldn't you just do a normal boot and check your environment variables and look if XKeysymDB is set? If it is, please post it here. We must check which package causes this problem.

Check the output of (and post it):

Code: Select all

# env

am I the only nvidia card user who experiences problems with the driver after xorg rc3 upgrade ?

My direct rendering seems to be dead with rc3. Are you having any problems other than that?

I've got some new observations of xmodmap behavior in rc3...

So my MX900 mouse has like a thousand buttons on it. Actually I can think of 9 possible things to count as buttons. Anyway though, in addition to being able to use the scroll wheel to move up and down there are buttons above and below the scroll wheel that do the same thing. And it works... sorta. When I open up to my homepage I can scroll up and down with the scrool wheel and both buttons (correctly). But once I've linked somewhere else and there's back history in Firefox it (the up button specifically) activates the back function every time until I reach the end of history and then it's used for scrolling again. The scroll wheel itself and the down button are unaffected. The down button doesn't try to do forward history if there is some, so I don't know why up would try go back.

Also, xmodmap thinks I have 13 buttons. I have buttons = "9" in my mouse section but it doesn't believe me. And the map I have to do now is different from before:

xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 8 9 4 5 6 7 10 11 12 13"
used to be
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5 8 9"

seems to give me close-to-correct functionality (with zaxismapping = "6 7")

Well, yesterday a dozen new packages were updated of the modular X server.
Now emacs complains

Code: Select all

Warning: no fonts matching `-*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1' available [2 times]
What is this? I had in ~/.Xdefaults

Code: Select all

Emacs*font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
working perfect for a while.

:( That doesn't work for me, still can't use the keyboard - every key I press on it just changes resolution.

Are you really sure it isn't listed when you don't export it? You must be kidding me ;) Are we running the same code?

Could you run this:

Code: Select all

# rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/libX11-0.99.4
# ebuild /usr/portage/x11-libs/libX11/libX11-0.99.4.ebuild compile
Please, show me:
/var/tmp/portage/libX11-0.99.4/work/libX11-0.99.4/src/config.h

I'm especially interested in all lines that have this string:

Code: Select all

XKEYSYMDB
or

Code: Select all

KEYSYMDB

Doing that once seemed to fix it. When I logged in from a different terminal without exporting that variable the problem was also gone. Works with normal user too.

I am getting another error message that's a little disconcerting:
FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

This appears when the X server quits. As with the previous issue, it doesn't seem to cause any problems while using X.

Also, even though I have emerged libXTrap, I still get errors about X not being able to find the module xtrap.

in /var/tmp/portage/libX11-0.99.4/work/libX11-0.99.4/src/StrKeysym.c

Code: Select all

        dbname = getenv("XKEYSYMDB");
        if (!dbname)
            dbname = KEYSYMDB;
        keysymdb = XrmGetFileDatabase(dbname);
The only (impossible) thing that could be happening is that the KEYSYMDB value is incorrect. The only way this could be happening is that the StrKeysym.c file is compiled with -DKEYSYMDB="some_incorrect_path" (which simply won't happen when building modular).

So, you probably would have to debug the code and buildsystem to resolve this issue (You need to have C knowledge to do so). I can't "fix" this because the code simply works here.

Well I am not worried. The whole export thing works so I will leave it alone until they come out with the final release or rc4..

Hmn. For you the same question: Does it ever work without XKEYSYMDB is set? (which should be the case)

So, double check the output of env before running startx.

I would rather have it fixed today than having to wait for developper to run into this same problem. If nobody but you has the problem.....

Remember: We are the Beta testers able to test these Release Candidates on a very wide range of setups. ;)

I had problems with the new (8xxx) nVidia drivers and rc3 myself. Some things to check:
  • If you cannot load the kernel module, ensure that you are compiling it with the same kernel you compiled your kernel
  • If you are on amd64, make sure that /etc/env.d/03opengl is pointing to /usr/lib instead of /usr/lib32 (eselect-opengl is pretty broken for amd64)
  • Look through /var/log/Xorg.0.log and check for lines starting with EE. I had a problem where X was loading the xorg GLX libraries rather than the nVidia ones. If that is the case for you, try adding a line in the Files section in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf like: ModulePath "/usr/lib/opengl/nvidia"
    Make sure it is before the default module path

Hmn. For you the same question: Does it ever work without XKEYSYMDB is set? (which should be the case)

So, double check the output of env before running startx.
The problem seems to be completely gone. Not sure how, not sure why. I won't ask questions, as long as it works ;).

Hmm, strange. Did the update to rc3 along with some updated packages from gnome 2.12 yesterday. I now have one big issue: for some reason the user I log into x with have big problems (icons not displayring, errormessage from the gnome-configuration-something and so on and so on).
How ever I can start and log any user into a nested widnow and everything for them works nice no matter what.

Any one who could give me a hint on where to start poke?
