I have gnome-light installed and nautilus-cd-burner-2.10.2 but when i put a blank dvd in the stray and double click on /mnt/cdrom, i get the error:

Code: Select all

Unable to mount the selected volume.
mount: block device /dev/cdrw is write-protected, mounting read-only

mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified
When i tried to burn some data to dvd i got this:

Code: Select all

Insert blank disc
Please put a blank disc, with at least 4677 MiB free, into the drive.
Permission of /dev/hdc is 777
in /etc/fstab, i have:

Code: Select all

/dev/cdrw /mnt/cdrom auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed,users 0 0
/dev/cdrw is a link pointing to /dev/hdc
How can i burn dvd and cdrom?

You can't mount a blank DVD unless you are using packet writing.

What program are you burning with and what is the error you get when trying to burn? What type of session: multisession, DAO, SAO?
Could be you are trying to burn to a disk that has a session already or not empty.

What is that pamconsole option in fstab, I have never seen that one before?

I open 2 nautilus, one i choose go-->cd/dvd creator, then i drag the files from the other nautilus to the first one and click "write to cd". I think the program i used is nautilus-cd-burner. The error i get when i click that button is:

Insert blank disc
Please put a blank disc, with at least 4677 MiB free, into the drive.

I did check the disk, it is empty
The options to mount cd/dvd for /dev/hdc is copied from fedora fstab, so i dont know what palmconsole is. If possible, can you post your fstab? Do i have to do anything in the kernel to support cd/dvd burning?
Thanks for the reply

My /etc/fstab won't help since I do not have any entries in there for my optical drives.
I use KDE and pmount takes care of mounting removeable media when needed.

Someone who knows gnome better will have to help.

The only thing I could suggest would be to make sure dvd+rw-tools is emerged and try burning from the command line with growisofs. My guess is that the burning works fine, it is probably something pertaining to the auto-mounting in gnome.

i used

Code: Select all

equery list dvd+rw-tools
and it showed nothing
Then i tried

Code: Select all

emerge --pretend dvd+rw-tools
and this is what i got

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] app-cdr/dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8
I dont know what the R means, do i have dvd+rw-tool or not?

equery is far from perfect.

I use gnomeBaker to make data dvd as root, it works well but when i try to do the same task as a normal user, i always receive instruction telling me to put a blank disk into the drive although i did have in in the drive. What can i do to make the normal user write dvd???

Is your user in the cdrom and cdrw group?

You can check with the "groups" command.

It should display at least "cdrom" among the list of groups (I don't think cdrw is necessary because I can burn CDs just fine and I'm not in the cdrw group).

in your /etc/fstab/ file make sure you have it so it looks like this:

Code: Select all

/dev/hdb /mnt/hdb auto noauto,noatime 0 0
mine works like that but for users to mount without being in the cdrom group you need to add either "user" or "users" so it looks like this:

Code: Select all

/dev/hdb /mnt/hdb auto noauto,noatime,user 0 0
can't remember if its user or users.

Code: Select all

david@localhost ~ $ groups
wheel audio cdrom video games users portage

A DVD or CD doesn't have to be mounted in order to burn to it, so the entry in the fstab shouldn't matter for that purpose.
