I can hear everyone in ut2k4!

When playing ut2k4, I can hear everyone in the map no matter where they are. It's very annoying. I can hear them shooting, walking, and jumping as if they were right next to me when in fact, they are on the other side of the map.

I notice the sound is set to use OpenAL in the settings (that's the only option), but I do not have OpenAL installed, but I see there's an ebuild for it. Is it required that I install it? I'm emerging that now to see if it fixes the problem, but please let me know if anyone has had this issue and what they did about it.

Thanks.

EDIT: Well, installing OpenAL didn't seem to change anything at all. Is OpenAL built into ut2k4 or something?

Anyway, any ideas?

I am pretty sure UT2K4 is a statically compiled binary. That makes dependencies a non-issue.

Looks like there may be a couple suggestions there.

Unfourtunatley, none of their suggestions have worked.

I installed ut2004-demo to see if it would do it in that and it does not. So I doubt its a problem with my system, but a problem with ut2k4.

You could try replacing builtin openal with cvs openal (I hope ut2004 doesn't use alut, then you'll get a prob as it was split out). There was a fix lately for this issue if I understand correctly. Furthermore you'd profit from my MMX work I commited to OpenAL lately (I have cvs write access).
