ipv6 setup problem

  • Quote

Post by triablo » Sat Aug 06, 2005 2:04 am

Hi!

I have this elegant little problem setting up ipv6 support...

- I have activated everything i could find in mentioning ipv6 in Device Drivers -> Networking Support -> Networking Options.
- AND I activated the ipv6 feature in rc.conf.

Yet still i don't seem to have a working ipv6 setup.
(no ipv6 in `ifconfig lo`, no existing "/proc/net/if_inet6")
Is there anything else i have to do to make the crap work?

I tried asking at IRC (both freenode and efnet), but it's funny how busy all the people get when someone needs help... :)

thanks for serious answers.

how did you setup the tunnel ? .. I mean, you do have an ipv6 tunnel(ipv6->ipv4), right ?

erm, i might have miisspelled myself.
i haven't set up any tunnel broker yet. what I'm dealing with, is getting my kernel to SUPPORT the ipv6 protocol. should be the easiest thing, yet I'm still having problems.

in the kernel config:
--> networking --> networking options --> <*> The IPv6 protocol

and after booting the new kernel:

Code: Select all

test -f /proc/net/if_inet6 && echo "Running kernel is IPv6 ready"
Running kernel is IPv6 ready
which kernel are you using, eventually put the kernel config online.

that's _exactly_ what i've been trying for about 100 times.
i DID activate ipv6, i DID recompile the kernel & reboot, and i also DID NOT have the ipv6 support. (no /proc/net/if_ìnet6 yet)

not to be rude or anything, but that's why i came here.

can you try a plain vanilla kernel ?
I've seen tons and tons of people having trouble with these gentoo patched kernels, which are nowhere to be seen on vanilla kernels.

from the config you do have ipv6 enabled ( CONFIG_IPV6=y )
So if I were you, I would try a vanilla kernel w/out wierd patches.

gah, it's a 233mhz machine, so compiling a new kernel from scratch would be a whole day project. but i guess it's worth it! ;)

thank you, it worked perfectly with the vanilla kernel.

Do you know about any good nordic tunnel providers?

And when I have a running ipv6 tunnel, how do I do stuff via it? like, connect to IRC, etc via the tunnel

there arent any nordic TB's anymore, there used to be one in norway, but its closed.

i'd recomend sixxs.net - its pretty stable.
then read some docs about ipv6 and how to setup and use it.
