Wut u mean free partition i got windows XP installed and i dont wanna uninstall it.

# After step 5, core packages, which are the same on all Gentoo installations, are installed
# After step 6, you have compiled your Linux kernel
# After step 7, you have written most of your Gentoo system configuration files
# After step 8, necessary system tools (which you can choose from a nice list) are installed
# After step 9, your choice of bootloader has been installed and configured and you are logged in into your new Gentoo installation

And help here plz Core package is the main file rite correct.
How do i cimpile my kernel
And how to write config files????
What list shows system tools?

The steps are explained in the handbook...

If from the livecd you type "fdisk -l" , it will show your partitions.

He means if you have your HD partioned. Like XP on C: , and maybe you have a D: E: and F: that you are not using w hich could be formatted. If not, trash your windows and start over. Install gentoo first. THen windows XP. Do you have free partions then? another way to tell is. If your drive is 120Gigs, and ur C: is 120 gigs, then you dont have any free partions

Following the gentoo handbook for the iso you downloaded. It takes you through these steps
A bootloader is what screen you are brought up to when your computer is turned on. Some are Grub or Lilo. Grub is used in the handbook. so if you wanted to dual boot. ur bootloader would come up and say

Gentoo 2.6.11
Windows XP

and you highlight which one you want to boot.

edit: we keep posting at the same time  , lol

If you are going to reinstall XP, you should install XP before Linux. Just leave enough free space for new partitions.

Lag? From the bootloader, you choose which one you want to boot.

Here's a nice guide: http://www.funroll-loops.org/
With the stages 1 2 and 3 What stage should i use?
Stage 3.

Use stage 3.
You are not booting at the same time. So theres no lag. Your bootloader comes up after your mobo is loaded and asks you which one you want to load.

good settings with what?

i wouldnt tweak your harddrive performance in linux unless you know exactly what your doing. Is that what you meant?

When you start your computer, windows will not be loaded. That screen with the blue bars going across saying Windows XP will not come up. If you have grub, which you probably will if you follow handbook. A blue screen, with a nice splash background will pop up all before windows even thinks of loading that says basically
Choose which OS you want to boot
Linux
Windows XP

use down/up arrow to choose
if you choose windows XP THEN windows will load, if you choose linux windows will do absolutley nothing nor touched at all... so that solves ur lag problem. lol

A kernels the core of your operating system. It's basically , um, I'm not sure how to expain this one. For example, you can load different drivers or things into your kernel before it is compiled. Compiled meaning when it is turned into machine code for processing (1's and 0's). Another example. If you had a SATA drive, you would have to go to your kernel settings and put in the driver for that, which theres a lot of forum threads on that in this forum.
umm, im not sure what else to say besides its the Core of your operating system. Install gentoo and you will have a much better understanding as you experience it, and go through the settings.

Maybe, the easiest way would be to boot from the gentoo x86 livecd you downloaded and try to follow the gentoo handbook, it will take you through all of these steps. You could then use the webbrowser links (non-graphical) on the livecd, to post your specific questions here on the problems that you may encounter on the way. I highly recommend that you make backups of your data on your windows system first in case something goes wrong, and do some research on partitions on the web. Good luck.

Then perhaps you should look up whether there is actually a meaningful difference, and alieviate such thoughts with facts.

Huh well win rar says it is lol.. ok anyways i should do stage 3.... in pros and cons it says its the crappiest one

Now fill in your nameserver(s) using the following as a template. Make sure you substitute ${NAMESERVER1} and ${NAMESERVER2} with the appropriate nameserver addresses:

Code Listing 23: /etc/resolv.conf template

nameserver ${NAMESERVER1}
nameserver ${NAMESERVER2}

nameserver??

/dev/hda1 ext2 32M Boot partition
/dev/hda2 (swap) 512M Swap partition
/dev/hda3 ext3 Rest of the disk Root partition

Rest of disK??? so ill have 0 hd wtf?

And do i need to wipe all my partitions before install? as it says here
Removing all Partitions

We will first remove all existing partitions from the disk. Type d to delete a partition. For instance, to delete an existing /dev/hda1:
Wut do i do for partitions wuts like a good thing for my specs ????

Last but not least
Depending on your installation medium, you have a couple of tools available to download a stage. If you have links2 available, then you can immediately surf to the Gentoo mirrorlist and choose a mirror close to you.
Does the boot cd have links2 already?
