I updated to gnome-2.10 and the volume control applet is gone.
"Right click => Add to panel " gives me no items concerning volume control.

aLeX_1, thanks for your reply.

I emerged gamix, as you suggested, however I still cannot add a volume-contol-applet to my gnome-panel.
Right click on the panel still doesn't show anything about volume-control.

I need a volume contol applet stuck on gnome-panel, that disappeared after updating gnome, not a GUI-mixer.

thanks.

Do I have to try re-emerge gnome, then?

Do you know the name of the pakage that contains volume control applet?

I don't, sorry. But I do know that a new Volume Control applet is part of Gnome 2.10, because I saw it listed on their "What's New" page.

The applet shows up as "Volume Control (Adjust the sound volume)" when I right-click on a panel and select "Add to Panel...". When I right-click on the new panel icon and select "About", it says, "Volume Applet 2.10.0 (A GNOME/Gstreamer-based volume control applet)". Running the applet runs gnome-volume-control. (You should try running this from the command line. If you can, you could at least build your own applet.)

solved by emerging gstreamer, gst-plugins

  • Quote

Post by sandrain » Wed Jun 15, 2005 1:27 am

Solved:
Did emerging gstreamer and gst-plugins.
Finally, emerged gnome-applets again(USE flag "+gstreamer" was marked).

And "right click on the panel=>Add to panel" shows me "Volume Control" item.

But it's strange that I used the applet without knowing that I installed gstreamer and gst-plugins
before updating to gnome-2.10. That is, I didn't installed the pakages by hand. And this time, gnome-2.10,
I had to install the pakages manually.

Anyway, thanks everybody.

I'm having a similar problem

When I click on"Open Volume Control" get the following message:
Failed to start Volume Control: Failed to execute child process "gnome-volume-control" (No such file or directory)
Running "gnome-volume-control" from a terminal yields the following:
$ gnome-volume-control
bash: gnome-volume-control: command not found
Simply put: gnome-volume-control does not exist on my system.

I have the latest versions of gst-plugins, and gstream emerged. I also have emerged gnome-applets with "gstreamer" in my gnome-applets package use flags.

I don't have much experiance with the portage system, can anyone give me some hints to figure out what package gnome-volume-control is part of and what use flags it depends on?

A handy portage tool is equery, which is part of the app-portage/gentoolkit package.

This lets you do things like this:

Code: Select all

eve max # equery belongs gnome-volume-control
[ Searching for file(s) gnome-volume-control in *... ]
gnome-extra/gnome-media-2.10.0 (/usr/share/gnome/help/gnome-volume-control)
gnome-extra/gnome-media-2.10.0 (/usr/bin/gnome-volume-control)
This tells you that gnome-volume-control is in the gnome-media package.
