Nautilus broken

  • Quote

Post by omnicloud » Sun Apr 03, 2005 11:06 pm

Well, nautilus has been sketchy ever since I installed but it finally stopped working the other day. The desktop won't display and the file browser won't load completely either.

Here's a screencap of the file browser trying to load. Notice the CPU usage on the top. It won't go past that spot no matter how long I wait.

The desktop does the same thing. I tried starting it from the terminal to see any unusual output but all I got was the usual

Code: Select all

(nautilus:18503): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

Of course I have... I have re-emerged it 11 times in the past 24 hours, using different USE and CFLAGS and it just won't open.

Mkay... I just did a quick search and it seems that this is a little phenomenon.
Maybe you have a gnome-session or gconf problem. Make sure that you have no old sessions stored, emerged two different versions of gconf or gnome-vfs a.s.o. You also can also try to delete temp-files, e.g. /tmp and dot-files in your /home/user dir. Make a backup of files if you are not sure what you delete! Be sure that your clock is set to the right date and time, try re-emerge gnome-session and gnome-vfs. Can you run gnome nautilus as root? Have you emerged anything since your last login or setted up, e.g. supermount?
I am /root and if you see me laughing you better have a backup.

Okay, after clearing /tmp it starts but freezes just before it's a usable state... so close! What should I do next?

Tried all I posted, especially re-emerge gnome-session and gnome-vfs?

Code: Select all

naota@mges ~ $ nautilus -c
running nautilus_self_check_search_uri
running nautilus_self_check_file_utilities
running nautilus_self_check_file_operations
running nautilus_self_check_directory
running nautilus_self_check_file

FAIL: check failed in nautilus-file.c, line 6209
      evaluated: nautilus_file_get_display_name (file_1)
       expected: Trash
            got: trash
running nautilus_self_check_icon_container
running nautilus_self_check_icon_factory
I just cleared the /home/naota/.nautilus/metafiles and now I'm emerging gnome-vfs

Where would old sessions be stored? Re-emerging gconf and gnome-vfs didn't work. If the sessions are stored in /tmp then I already cleared them.

Nautilus DOES run as root though, and I think it has something to do with ORBit.

When I open nautilus as root, in the /tmp directory, there is a lock file that gets created but as a user, the lock file never gets created.

Code: Select all

naota@mges ~ $ gconf-sanity-check-1
Please contact your system administrator to resolve the following problem:
Failed to get a file lock: Failed to lock '/tmp/gconfd-naota/lock/ior': probably
another process has the lock, or your operating system has NFS file locking mis
configured, or a hard NFS client crash caused a stale lock (Resource temporarily
 unavailable)
but if I run gconf-sanity-check-1 as root, I get no error.

quick problem, when I revdep-rebuild, it tries to emerge opera-8.00_beta2 but I have opera-8.00_beta3. I think this is because before I learned about unmasking, I tried to emerge by path, it gave me a warning, but I didn't understand it at that time, I tried to unmerge it before emerging opera-8.00_beta3, but it still does it.

Any solution yet? I am having the same problems. No desktop and no file browser. I have had the problem before and just running nautilus from the terminal used to sort it out. Not this time though. It does run as root though.

Open to suggetions.

Only thing I have found that works is to scrap the old user and make a new one.

And is this a seemless process? Can you just delete "userx" and recreate "userx" with the same password etc and still have access to the original /home/userx?

I don't know if that will work. I made a new username and deleted the old one. It's probably a config file or temp file or something that I can't figure out that causes it.

OK, I managed to sort of sort this one out. I tried to log out as user but was not successfull - everything hangs. I had to do a ctrl-alt-backspace to get out of X. Then logged in as root and deleted the /home/userx/.gconf, .gconfd, .gnome* and .nautilus direcotries. Logout as root and re-log in as userx. You have lost all your settigns and have to redefine your desktop settings etc. But hey, at least everything is working again.

I tried doing that but it didn't work for me. And when it hangs while trying to logout, give it a minute and it will eventually logout. Or you can do the Zap method like you did.

Try disabling hald

I have a fresh gentoo dist here... And I wasn't able to start nautilus since I started hald (/etc/init/hald). Try stopping the service if it's running. I am not sure it is the same problem though, since i wasn't able to run nautilus as root either.

That wasn't my problem. I had disabled hald because it was modifying my /etc/fstab without asking me.
