Works since the last 3, 4 days. Thanks!
The freeze was probably caused by the thermical problem.

Hi All,

I have seen that both the discussion forums have completely died down for the last two weeks or so. I have personally not experienced a single firefox related crash in around three weeks. I am fully up-to date (x86 stable). Hopefully we will not see anything like this again.

Hi Vola,

Could you post more info? I am absolutely convinced my problem has been fixed. I have even fixed sleep states on my laptop. I now run my system continously without any reboots. At night I put it in sleep mode, in the morning I wake up the system and run it. Through out the day I run at least 30 firefox instances. I have not had a lockup for at least two weeks. I have never experienced that before with firefox.

If I had to guess, I would say it would have to be something particular to your laptop. Both discussion forums as well as some personal contacts I have been monitoring have completely died down in the last 2-3 weeks. I currently have the most stable system I have ever had in the last 10 years!!

I'm experiencing stranges freezes too lately: mouse keeps responding, system keeps working, but X is locked. I have it +- once a day, and my last one (half an hour ago) was when I was browsing the web with firefox. The strange thing is, I started getting these crashes +- 2 weeks ago, and before, my laptop was rockstable. I have really no idea what causes this, but now I've seen this thread, I'll try to check my top-output after it crashes, and see if firefox is causing it :)
Fyi, I'm running 1.6.11-gentoo-r4, with firefox-1.0.2 (compiled from source)
My system is a P4 3.06 (SMT enabled, and no, i'm not going to disable it ;p), with 1 gig of ram and a 9200 mobility

Was this resolved? because I'm experiencing this now. It only started happening when I started using ati-drivers to get my 3d HW acceleration. Everything works fine except firefox. I can be browsing the web and I go to click into a textbox form (like the one I'm typing this message into now) and then the entire system freezes. I cannot move the mouse, ctrl+alt+del, ssh in, and it won't even respond to pings. This is the craziest thing I've seen. I really want to use firefox but it's near impossible with this problem. I'm using konqueror right now to get by, but I really want firefox back. I really do not like konqueror; for one gmail does not run well in it.

Code: Select all

jbwillia@heimdall ~ $ qpkg -I -v xorg-x11
x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1 *
jbwillia@heimdall ~ $ qpkg -I -v ati-drivers
media-video/ati-drivers-8.10.19 *
jbwillia@heimdall ~ $ qpkg -I -v kernel
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r6 *
sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.8.1-r2 *
....arrgghh, I despise konqueror ... I'm having firefox withdrawal. I'm going to try recompiling firefox, but I do not think it will have any effect.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
for everyexe in $(find /home/you -name "*.exe" | egrep -i ".*exe$")
do
    kill $(pgrep you)
done

I know this thread is more or less dead but I just figured I would offer my two cents.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 running 2.6.11-rc4 with nvidia 7167.

Currently I am having some problems running at my max resolution under nvidia (max is 1400x1050) as I can only get 1280x1024. I only mention this because it pertains to what this thread is about.
Anyway, I like playing games that require the nvidia drivers in Linux like Enemy Territory. So usually when I'm not playing i use the nv driver in 1400 mode. Recently I've kinda gotten lazy about it and started to use the nvidia driver more... this however crashes my system whenever i use firefox... and it is repeatable. I don't really know what this means although based on what others put I'm thinking its the 3d acceleration combined perhaps with some firefox extentions/plugins although i never got firefox past my homepage (quicknote).

I'm using firefox and nvidia drivers. But I disabled the SMT Kernel modul (see above). Everything works fine now. Try to compile the latest Kernel - maybe it's fixed. Or disable SMT in your current Kernel. Sorry for this short anwser but I'm very busy atm.

well, I recompiled firefox and removed one of my extensions I didn't find necessary (tabbrowser preferences) and so far, no freezes. I'm giving it a bit more time before I call my problem solved.

These were my compile flags:

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.0.3 -debug -gnome +java +ldap -mozdevelop -moznoxft -mozsvg -mozxmlterm +xinerama -xprint 0 kB
I'll post again if I get another freezeup. (fingers crossed on this end)...

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
for everyexe in $(find /home/you -name "*.exe" | egrep -i ".*exe$")
do
    kill $(pgrep you)
done

X the culprit?

I use LTSP at home for different computers and the only time I experience the freezup problems is when either konqueror or firefox has to load a flash plugin on one of the remote consoles (not the local server). I suspect the problem is Xorg a flash/related problem. LTSP's present Xorg version is 6.8.2 and I am running the nsplugins from KDE 3.4.2 and libflash 0.4.10-r1.

Now...this might be far-fetched but I have recently switched the server to the nvidia drivers to get OpenGL working.... I wonder if this couldn't have affecterd the plugins into trying to use some X extensions which aren't available on the Xorg from the consoles (server's Xorg version is 6.8.2-r1)
M$ Windows: When in doubt, REBOOT
Linux: When in doubt, RTFM ;-)
