Just perform the install using the Ubuntu liveCD, as if you're using the Gentoo liveCD.

Sorry, but you will have to install this way as the Gentoo CD does not have the driver for your network card.

The advantage of using Ubuntu's liveCD is that you can install in a graphical environment. Open a gnome-terminal window for the install, then you can surf the Net using firefox while waiting for things to compile. :D

I have an nForce3 chipset on my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, the modules I use are forcedeth for the 100Mbit adapter, and r8169 for the 1000Mbit adapter.

I'm certain I've said this before: nForce network --> forcedeth. Forcedeth is an OSS driver that had a few problems but nVidia helped and now it works fine. Or it did on my nForce2 and now does on my nForce4. As far as I remember that driver is on the liveCD as well so just do modprobe forcedeth and then continue with net-setup.

I've got the same motherboard as you, a MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce3. I've got the on board network card working. However you need to patch the kernel to get it too work, a simple modprobe won't do it. Google for forcedeth will give you the homepage of the guy who wrote the forcedeth module. He has the patches you need. You can apply them against the 2.6.7 kernel (which is what I'm using).

However since the LiveCD kernel probably doesn't have these patches, then the network card won't work. I had a DVD I got off Linux Format, so I was able to get the distfiles off that and do a networkless install. Your options are (a) find a DVD to do a networkless install, (b) get another NIC or (c) make your own LiveCD with a patches kernel.
