XFCE4 4.2.1 wanting to downgrade on -upD world? [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by Veto » Fri Mar 25, 2005 9:31 am

I've got /etc/portage/package.keywords to ~x86 on xfce4* and package.unmask on xfce4* and emerge -upD world wants to downgrade to 4.2.0 from 4.2.1 and 4.2.1.1 (panel + other). I'm not sure why I'm getting this even after the upgrade to 4.2.1.1 happened for xfce4-base and -panel.

Anyone else seeing this?

SOLUTION: For me, it turned out that xfce4-base/xfce4-extras wasn't ~x86 and that was triggering a dependency downgrade for the rest of XFCE4. Putting xfce4-base/xfce4-extras ~x86 into /etc/portage/package.keywords fixed it. The lead on this for me was wheelspin's post in the XFCE4.2 Released thread where he had a similar issue with xfce4-fsguard.

What does your /etc/portage/package.keywords look like? Perhaps you need to remove the "*" from the name of a package!!!

That's strange because I have

Code: Select all

xfce-base/xfce4 ~x86
in my /etc/portage/package.keywords and it doesn't want to downgrade my xfce4... What does your /etc/make.conf look like anyway?

So do you ONLY have xfce4 ~x86 in your make.conf or were you saying that you also have that? I also have quite a few entries in /etc/portage/package.unmask back from when 4.2.0 was masked. The XFCE entries look like this:

Code: Select all

xfce-base/xfce4
xfce-base/xfwm4
xfce-base/libxfce4mcs
xfce-base/libxfce4util
xfce-base/libxfcegui4
xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager
xfce-base/xfce-mcs-plugins
xfce-base/xfce-utils
xfce-base/xfce4-base
xfce-base/xfce4-extras
xfce-base/xfce4-panel
xfce-base/xfce4-session
xfce-base/xfdesktop
xfce-base/xffm
xfce-base/xfprint
xfce-extra/xfce4-trigger-launcher
xfce-extra/xfcalendar
xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox
xfce-extra/xfce4-toys
xfce-extra/xfce4-mixer
xfce-extra/xfce4-systray
xfce-extra/xfce4-appfinder
xfce-extra/xfce4-icon-theme
xfce-extra/xfwm4-themes
xfce-extra/xfce4-minicmd
xfce-extra/xfce4-taskbar
xfce-extra/xfce4-artwork
xfce-extra/terminal
xfce-extra/exo
x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce
/etc/make.conf:

First of all, I don't have /etc/portage/package.unmask and I only have "xfce-base/xfce4 " in my /etc/portage/package.keywords besides some other stuff like

Code: Select all

gnome-extra/gdesklets-core ~x86
app-admin/gkrellm ~x86
x11-plugins/gkrellweather ~x86
app-admin/torsmo ~x86
x11-wm/enlightenment ~x86

Interesting, I can comment out/remove all the XFCE entries from package.unmask, but I must continue to have each XFCE entry in /etc/portage/package.keywords or it will dep-fail. Interestingly, it depfails on the 4.2.1 version, but as I went through and uncommented all my package.keywords one by one (between failures) when I finally got emerge -upD to complete it wanted to downgrade to 4.2.0 again! Argh.

I'm still befuddled by this. I've manually updated all the other packages but XFCE thinking that one of them had a dependency that was forcing the 4.2.0 downgrade. No-Go, emerge -upD world still wants to downgrade 4.2.1/4.2.1.1 to 4.2.0 on a emerge -upD world. I've emptied packages.unmask and commented out all XFCE reference in package.keywords and add them back as needed by failed emerge -upD worlds (asking for the 4.2.1/4.2.1.1 version to be ~x86'ed) and when an emerge -upD world completes it still says it's going to downgrade.

What confuses me is that if I comment out the ~x86's for XFCE in package.keywords and add them back as needed to avoid a depfail, the depfail is asking for the 4.2.1/4.2.1.1 version, but once they are added back it wants to downgrade! Argh!

Another data point:

I went through and did a emerge -upD ${i} on every package that emerge -upD world was trying to downgrade and not a single one of them suggested I do anything (4.2.1/4.2.1.1 is correct, no 4.2.0 downgrade needed). I think I'll try rebuilding every package with the same for i in <packages> and see if this issues persists.

Note: Doing a for i in <all xfce4 ports>; emerge -u ${i}; done finished fine with a complete rebuild of 4.2.1/4.2.1.1. Following emerge -upD world still wants to dongrade to 4.2.0. I note that a emerge -up world thinks everything is up to date.

I am having a simillar problem with gnome wanting to either install crap I don't want evolution, and mozilla or wanting to downgrade packages. Here is the emerge output after emerge-pu =gnome-base/gnome

Code: Select all

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies . ...done!
[ebuild U ] dev-libs/libxslt-1.1.13-r1 [1.1.13]
[ebuild U ] net-libs/libsoup-2.2.3 [2.2.2]
[ebuild N ] mail-client/evolution-2.0.4
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/zenity-2.8.2 [2.8.1]
[ebuild U ] app-arch/file-roller-2.8.4 [2.8.3]
[ebuild U ] net-misc/vino-2.8.1 [2.8.0.1]
[ebuild U ] app-text/ggv-2.8.3 [2.8.1]
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/gcalctool-4.4.22 [4.4.20]
[ebuild N ] gnome-extra/gnome-games-2.8.3
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/nautilus-cd-burner-2.8.7 [2.8.6]
[ebuild U ] app-text/gpdf-2.8.3 [2.8.2]
[ebuild N ] www-client/mozilla-launcher-1.32
[ebuild N ] www-client/mozilla-1.7.6-r1
[ebuild N ] www-client/epiphany-1.4.8
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-2.8.3-r1
Where could the real problem be, I really don't want to mix up to date and out of date packages and further screw things up. My world file is not listing these gnome dependencies either which is just confusing me more.

If you don't want to install all that crap from Gnome, then perhaps you should consider using gnome-light!!!
