i have some old 486 computers that i hope some basement-dwelling linux nerd can put to good use. i'd really prefer to see anyone take them and use them for some linux related project. Hopefully this will prevent them from going right into a landfill.

If you're interested in an old PC for use as a router or an FTP host, maybe these will help you.

(2) Compaq Deskpro XE 486. 66 MHz i486DX2. Fully populated with 32 MB RAM. ISA Bus, Integrated video & sound. No drives.

(1) Compaq Presario 633. 33 MHz i486SX. ISA Bus. Integrated video & sound. Good MB, Dead PSU. For parts.

(1) Gateway 4DX2-66V . Baby AT motherboard. 66 MHz i486DX2. ISA and VLB slots.

This collection of junk is essentially 3 stripped computers and a motherboard -- no drives or monitors. None of it seems valuable enough to ship, so a local pickup is preferred. I'm in Chicagoland. Contact me by PM if you're insterested.

If you're insterested in making a router or a firewall out of these boxes, I can also set you up with the necessary 10-Base-T ISA cards.

Please do your part for ecology -- put these PCs to good use and help to keep them out of a landfill.

shipping costs time and money. is it worth it to you?

or are you just trying to inject levity into this thread?

Don't appear to be any Chicago users noticing (or interested). Maybe you can offer them to a local LUG.

95th and Western close enough for ya? ;)

Yeah...if you're sure you don't want the machines anymore, I'd be glad to find a use for them. Go ahead and drop me a PM if the machines are still around.

<bump>

Last Chance. I'm cleaning house and if nobody claims them, they're going into a landfill.

They'd make a great platform for a router or sniffer box, if anyone is so inclined. 8)

Do your part for ecology and recycle and old PC.

Wish I could BobP... but it's not worth it to ship to me. If I was in Chicago I'd take one. That is, unless you'll be visiting Ohio sometime soon. My 486 doesn't POST anymore, and I'd love to have another one just for fun.

Ditto. Doubt my parents would go for it though.

It's just not worth it any more... At the cost to keeping those 66Mhz running (~40-80watt/hrs) you might as well buy a small ARM cpu, or RISC and run Linux on that.

I'd love to take them from you, BobP, as I live in Milwaukee WI and am going to Judson College (in Elgin) this fall... I'm even coming down through Chicagoland on the 24th and 5th of June, for a school visit.

However, I already have a i486DX2 in my closet, waiting for my move to Judson so I can play MechWarrior 2 again without all the DOSBox crud. I don't think I could convince my mother to add a 7th computer in the house...

Sorry!
