Hi All,

I just did an emerge -uDV world, which updated the following xmms plugins:
Code:
media-sound/xmms
media-plugins/xmms-arts
media-plugins/xmms-mikmod
media-plugins/xmms-vorbis
media-plugins/xmms-mad
media-plugins/xmms-oss
media-plugins/xmms-alsa

and have not been able to play streaming audio since. :(

Any idea what's broken? Things like that used to happen when I was running ~x86, but now I am running a stable system. 8O

Maybe you don't have that mp3 USE flag?

I've got the exact same problem. Can't play any .pls files (e.g. somafm.com) with xmms after emerge world today. Can play local .mp3s just fine.

:cry:

Similar problem. I can play FLAC files off my harddrive, but I can no longer play CD's. When I go to the mount point, xmms doesn't even recognize the tracks to load in :roll: . It's as if I didn't even have a CD in the optical drive.

I suspect that we need to load in appropriate plugins that may not have come along with the new version of xmms. Do a search:
Code:

emerge search xmms | less

and see if anything looks promising. Reguarding my inability to play CD's, I found two promissing plugins: xmms-cdaudio and xmms-wav. I'm emerging the first now, and I'll let folks know the result...

Yes,

Code:
emerge xmms-cdaudio

that was the ticket!

Good luck.

. . . but I can play mp3's on my hda. It's streaming that fails. xmms tries one URL after another in rapid succession from the playlist, without connecting and without bringing a "cannot connect" type of popup.

I'll check when I get home what USE flags I have and whether it can play CD's.

I'll also check whether a bug has been raised. The ebuild ought to check for these things and either sort them out automatically, or flag them up for manual intervention.

Yes, solved! Streaming (.pls) works again. Thanks, pdr. Piwacet was right about plugins and the new version of XMMS.

Thanks everyone. Now, back to groovesalad on somafm.com. 8)

I had the same problem, and emerging xmms-mpg123 did not entirely solve it. Streaming playback was only restored once I disabled the xmms-mad plugin.

I also did the emerge -uvpD world today and xmms was upgraded/updated.

Afterwards I could play most of my ogg collection: the ones that had a quality of 10.

Those with a quality of 3 (so I could fit most of my collection on a dvd) would cause XMMS to skip each song afterwards for a second or two until it landed on a song with a quality of 10.

I came across this thread and noticed the last post where it was mentioned to disable xmms-mad plugin.

That worked for me. Once I did that XMMS cooperated again. Strange that a stable upgrade did this. I would expect another update soon to "fix" the issue. All in all though, an easy enough fix.

I re-emerged XMMS before I came across this thread, and this was the information given when the package was emerged:

Quote:
* media-sound/xmms now just provides the xmms binary and libxmms.
* All plugins that were packaged with xmms are now provided by other
* packages in media-plugins. Some of these are automatically pulled in
* based on USE flags. Others you will need to emerge manually. The
* following is a list of packages which were previously provided by
* media-sound/xmms that are not automatically emerged:
* media-plugins/xmms-blur-scope
* media-plugins/xmms-cdaudio
* media-plugins/xmms-disk-writer
* media-plugins/xmms-echo
* media-plugins/xmms-ir
* media-plugins/xmms-joystick
* media-plugins/xmms-opengl-spectrum
* media-plugins/xmms-sanalyzer
* media-plugins/xmms-song-change
* media-plugins/xmms-stereo
* media-plugins/xmms-tonegen
* media-plugins/xmms-voice
* media-plugins/xmms-wav

Perhaps it's helpful, perhaps not. :?

Thanks deoren,

That's helpful enough (I could swear I didn't find this when I looked into my /var/log/portage :? )

All we need now is a detailed explanation of what each plugin does, which of these respond to USE flags and which USE flags in particular. The xmms homepage only includes info on some of them.
