Fstab and grub entries for gentoo installation [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by hamayya » Sun Jan 09, 2005 3:56 pm

This is what I had before installing gentoo
Suse Professional on hda4 .I had my /boot on the root partition itself,no

seperate /boot partition existed.

Now I planned to install Gentoo on hda1 .Since I didnot have /boot partition

seperately,I blindly mounted the /boot of hda4 whenever the Gentoo handbook asks

for the /boot partition. So,I ended up having my /boot of hda4(initally containing

the /boot of suse) formatted with the gentoo /boot systesm.
All my gentoo compilation otherwise on hda1 went fine.Except that presently my

gentoo /boot is present in that of the suse one.I have no plans to retrieve suse

presently,but I need gentoo asap.

When I reload, all I get is an error and the system refuses to boot into gentoo.
The following are the locations of the image files..

/boot/initrd=2.6.4-52-default
/boot/initrd=2.6.9-gentoo-r1
/boot/initrd=2.6.9-gentoo-r1

Can someone please tell me what the contents of the FSTAB FILE and that of

GRUB.CONF file should be??

TIA

Your fstab should have this line:
/dev/hda4 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
change ext3 with your boot partition's filesystem.
In /boot/grub/grub.conf:
title Gentoo
root (hd0,3)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9 ro root=/dev/hda1
initrd /initrd-2.6.9
You need the kernel image.

I am in myoffice right now.I will try them as soon as I go home..........if the following problem is solved..

Now,I have another problem.I am unable to modify the fstab file through the Knoppix cd.and there is apparently no other way that i can get to that file..
All I get is a gurb prompt when I boot.........

TIA

Yes sorry. I thought you already had it in fstab:

Code: Select all

/dev/hda1 / xfs noatime 0 0

You can't boot knoppix or you can't edit the file? If you can boot knoppix you should have no problems too edit fstab. Just mount the partition.
If you can't boot knoppix... that's nothing to do with grub. Check your BIOS' boot sequence. If it's Award press the Esc key during the RAM check, and a boot-menu will appear.
