Well, here is my make.conf

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="X gnome samba 3dnow mmx sse"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
on CFLAGS i also had -O2 but i removed it now because some compilations was getting errors.

I will emerge xfree, gnome, samba.... after my make.conf is ok.

My Hardware: Pentium II 350 128mb ram
video trident 2mb (lol)
no sound!

tkz!

Just some things from my thaughts - so please excuse my grammar

A system is faster the smaller the binary is because of the caches in the system. Optimisations normally do not honor that the L2 Cache of a CPU is limited. On older systems I'd use -Os (Optimisation for size)

I would max out your USE flags so you wont be surprised by something not working later on. You can emerge "ufed", and it will give you a useful interface to all the different flags and there meaning - there are tons of them, but there are quite a few that you may want included by default...

Pentium processors don't support 3dnow so I'd remove that from your USE.

I would change -mcpu=i686 to -march=pentium3

Saves a lot of things and implies a lot of options automatically :)

Cflags: As said, remove -mcpu=i686 and add -march=pentium3, -O3 (I find this best after doing some benchmarks, but others find -O2 or -Os better), add -ffast-math :twisted:
Chost: Change i386 to i686
Use: Add gtk gtk2 -kde -qt (if you want gnome you don't want these), and remove the 3dnow (as said before)

You can also try to add LDFLAGS

Also you can try nptl

Here are my make.conf for a Pentium4 system:

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
USE="mmx mmx2 sse sse2 X gnome gtk gtk2 -kde -qt alsa perl python mpeg avi png jpeg oggvorbis quicktime spell xmms nptl esd -arts opengl"
