PostPosted: Fri Dec 31, 2004 2:29 am    Post subject: Build Error During Bootstrap Reply with quote

I am running the bootstrap.sh script during the Stage 1 install and have received the following error:

make[1]: cru: Command not found
make[1]: *** [libm4.a] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/m4-1.4.1/work/m4-1.4.1/lib'
make: *** [all] Error 1

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/m4-1.4.1 failed
!!! Function src_compile, Line 26, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
jrtayloriv

I'm seeing this as well. It looks as though the m4 package may be broken.

In that case, mask the package using package.mask:
Code:
echo ">=sys-devel/m4-1.4.1" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

But you will need to re-start the bootstrap.

I also ran into this problem. Someone broke the bookstrap!

That's odd the m4 package is broken, it hasn't been changed for months. I'll follow your suggestion to mask it and see if my bootstrap works.

Uh oh, I've just checked and version 1.4.1 is the only one in Portage.

Forget about masking, it will not work.

If you're affected, go to the bugzilla and file a bug report so that the devs can fix this blocker right away.

I get this message:

Code:
!!! All  ebuilds that could satisfy "sys-devel/m4" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-devel/m4-1.4.1 (masked by: package.mask)

It makes sense that the bootstrap would complain if it can't install one of its packages. Also, if it's being built in bootstrap, I assume m4 is important. Where oh where did that mysterious "cru" command go?

Edit: I'll submit the bug report.

I do not know whether this will help, but it's definitely worth a shot.

Try bootstrapping using a stage 3 tarball. It can be done, and you are free to change anything in make.conf, regardless of what the Handbook says, because it still is a stage 1 bootstrap.

My rationale for suggesting this is given in this thread

I re-emerged m4 on a Gentoo system that I already had working and found what the compile command is supposed to be.

Code:
ar cru libm4.a regex.o getopt.o getopt1.o error.o obstack.o xmalloc.o xstrdup.o

I was googling all over for a "cru" command. No wonder I couldn't find one, "cru" are the options that are supposed to be passed to the command "ar"!

It's the same ebuild running on both systems but "ar " is dropped off during a bootstrap causing the compile to fail. I'm at a loss as to what is behind this.

Temporary Fix:

I figured out how to get the bootstrapper on its merry way.
Code:
export AR=ar

Sounds too simple to be true but it works. I had to read through the Makefile to find that it was ignoring a variable for some reason. :?

Obviously typo, but it must have been introduced yesterday or the day before... I did an install on the 28'th and it worked fine.

my bad, i guess i didn't see the suggestion at the end of the page. well i just rolled back to a 2004.2 stage1 and it seems to have worked perfectly. does anyone know what a major drawback might be with this approach?[
