ipv6 in use flags

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Yes, the same here. Was there a change? Do we really need this ipv6 stuff already and whats the deal with it?

FWIW, I updated everything with --newuse weeks ago and I have had no problems whatsoever. The only thing I noticed is that my IP address gets prnted in ipv6 format sometimes. Also note that in order to actually use ipv6 you need to build support into the kernel as well.

ipv6 appeared as a new USE flag, since devs added it (along with acl) into some profiles.

I left that flag on on 2 different machines and recompiled everything that needed to. I didn't add the support in the kernel, but I don't have any problem to report so far. I'm not sure whether it's really useful (yet) though... At least it's harmless.

Alas, it is not harmless, or I would not have been searching for a IPV6 thread to find this one. Having IPV6 set breaks XDM. I just brought up a new system and when I run

Code: Select all

emerge info
I find all kind of USE flags that are NOT in my USE="xxxx" flags in my make.conf file. Where did
these two dozen other USE flags come from? It is easier to put IPV6, that I don't need,
in my kernel than spend two days recompile everything again. :-(

Telling me to set -IPV6 in my flags is absurd, as that means I need to negate every USE flag except
the ones I really want, because I do not know where these mystery flags are coming from.

make.defaults - every profile has a default set of USE flags. you edit them as you choose.

just put -ipv6 in your make.conf and re-emerge xorg-x11

yeah, that was a step in the handbook. ;)

try this in your make.conf

Code: Select all

USE="-* bobflag1 bobflag2 etc"
-* will turn off all the "mystery" flags, then you can just add the ones you want after. that's what i do.

cheers
