I have a cronjob that's been doing "emerge rsync" everyday at 2am. I wasn't aware that "emerge rsync" doesn't work anymore (it actually merges the package rsync now). So my portage tree hasn't been updated in about 10 days. Instead, my machine has been recompiling rsync every night. Doh!!!

Urm...`emerge rsync` has been deprecated for quite a while now, you know...

Personally, it used to irritate me no end when i would type out a huge list of packages to merge, and then have rsync somewhere in the middle of it. :?

Why not just sync manually when you want something new?

I quit using rsync when it was deprecated (2002?).

I know it was deprecated. I must have forgot when I made my cronjob a year ago. It still worked though.

As far as emerging manually goes, It's because I have a cronjob running "emerge world" every day... just kidding!! Don't flame me ;)

I just got tired of rsynching and watching lines scroll by every time I wanted to check if a certain package has been updated. This way, I know my portage tree has the latest and greatest ebuilds. Also, if you sync everyday, you have less to xfer as opposed to doing it every now and then, so it takes less time and presumably puts less load on the rsync mirrors.

Which updates? Portage updates or program updates? For portage, just put a cronjob between 1-6am to run "emerge sync".

For program updates, you should always do something like "emerge -p world" or "emerge -p system" and look at what is going to happen. If you simple do "emerge world", you can sometimes break your system, especially if you have packages using the "~x86" keyword. There are a lot of threads on this topic, so searching the forums is the best way to learn more.

I have 3 gentoo boxen here at home, and I only sync my server twice a week. Then the other 2 boxen sync from my server...

If you're only checking updates every 3 days, its useless to sync every night..

haha, I used to "emerge sync", until someone told me it was being deprecated in favor of "emerge rsync".

Now it's emerge --sync.

LOL.

why did they get rid of rsync? I was using rsync for updates until i last moved about a week or so ago. Within two weeks it was officially gone? I had the same thing where i did "emerge rsync" and it emerged rsync....do you need to update sync as well?

He meant "ricer" as described at Wikipedia. The relation to Gentoo is described at funroll-loops. I don't think the connotation here was racist.

They got rid of "emerge rsync" to avoid confusion. Doesn't really make sense for emerge to have a different behavior for only 1 package out of 7000+. Since there is no "sync" package, it's better to have "emerge sync" update the portage tree and "emerge rsync" will actually emerge rsync now.

If you type "emerge mplayer", your system will compile and install mplayer. In previous versions, typing "emerge rsync" didn't emerge rsync... you were required to do "emerge net-misc/rsync" to install the rsync package. Now, "emerge rsync" and "emerge mplayer" behave the same.
