| You can't normally do a stage 1 installation without a network connection. |

In the manual it doesnt seem to be a problem , it was suposed to work without an internet connection , what i think is that it is supposed to tem the compiler that the target is on the hda and ther is no step for it .
What could i have missed ?? |

im starting from stage one allready did :
Extracting the stage tarball
# tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-<subarch>-20040412.tar.bz2
Extracting a Portage snapshot
# tar -xvjf /mnt/cdrom/snapshots/portage-20040413.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr
Copy over source code
# mkdir /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles

| If you extracted the stage3 tarball you are starting from stage3 and don't need to bootstrap. The handbook clearly states that "A stage1 installation can only be performed when you have a working Internet connection. ". So if you extracted the stage3 tarball skip moving from stage 1 to stage 2 and moving from stage2 to stage3. |

I think this is not clear at all in the Handbook.Yes I saw:
"A stage1 installation can only be performed when you have a working Internet connection."
But seemingly countermanding this is the subsequent:
"Gentoo's Universal LiveCD is a bootable CD suitable to install Gentoo without networking.", in apparent contrast to the Minimal. As a Suse vet of 5 years, I'm used to mistakes and contradictions in guides. Since it doesn't make sense that Stage 1 is internet-only (when all the necessary philes are on-disk) I moved forward and failed likewise.
Suggest the Handbook clarify, as my internet is down, and I had to go to the library to post this. (My internet is via WiFi, and the Orinoco driver fails to load into LiveCD, with symbol errors)
I did find an apparent workaround to installing Stage1 without internet in the Alternative Install guide, so will take that home and try it, hoping it works. If not, I guess I'll settle for 3, and maybe fsck with optimizing later.
Also suggest vfat be included on LiveCD. I had a bad zip distro file on my CD, and wanted to replace it using floppy. No vfat module though. Fortunately I had another machine running *nix where I could format the floppy to ext2 and do the transfer. Maybe I'll submit it as a bug. |
