ok, here's the story:
i often use the command "emerge sync && emerge -uD world ; shutdown -h -t1 now" before i go to bed so that i can update my system and keep my parents happy by having it shut itself off when its done. The other night i decided to start this before i went to bed, but in the middle i hit CTRL+Z to pause it. little did i know that this would cause the shutdown part to come into action and it shut off my computer before i could do anything about it. When i started it back up it seemed that nothing was messed up, until i went to su. It gave me this message: "You are not authorized to su root". I didn't know what to do, then i thought maybe my groups got messed up, so i checked to make sure i was in "wheel" and i am. I am still somewhat of a novice with Linux in general, and i hope that someone can help me since i can't live without su. Feel free to ask for any info you need and thanks in advance! _________________ Screw you guys. I'm going home.

i think i may have narrowed it down to the /etc/pam.d/su file, but i don't have any experience with pam so hopefully someone who does will come and tell me what to do... soon! _________________ Screw you guys. I'm going home. |

Use the program in Gnome call "Users and Groups" under the System tools session to add the "wheel" group in your current user. Because when you update your system, your config files has been replaced.
[but it's so strange that when you check that file "/etc/group" you will see everything is okay. ] _________________ ÌìÀä Àä²»ÁËÎÒµÄÐÄ

turns out it was a pam config problem so i just replaced it with the one on my 2004.1 stage3 file (/etc/pam.d/su)
it was set to allow none but root to su before, and even though my user was in the wheel group it doesn't matter _________________ Screw you guys. I'm going home. |
