Xinerama stopped working

I have a Gentoo 2.4.22 vanilla install that was running Xinerama fine and then, the next time I turned it on KDE came up with 2 screens both displaying the same thing. There is nothing wrong with the displays except that it isn't Xinerama.

XFree log says, "Only one monitor detected. Second screen will not be created." But I can see display on this second monitor! The video card is an ATI Radeon 7500 dual head. I rebuilt xfree and qt using the USE='xinerama' parameter without relief.

Any suggestions, please? Thank you.
