After doing a emerge -u world I get 'setfont executable not found' on every boot. Any ideas what ebuild this lives in so I can downgrade or even better a fix :?

TIA.

setfont lives in a package called kbd. I'll emerge it at post my results.

MADcow, my system works okay, but certain keys such as £ or $ fail to work.

Emerge of kbd-1.0.8-r4 solves this issue for me. Previously had 1.0.6.

Edit "/etc/rc.conf" and uncomment and change the "CONSOLETRANSLATION=" option to:
Code:

CONSOLETRANSLATION="8859-15_to_uni"

restart "consolefont",
Code:

/etc/init.d/consolefont restart

You now have a working £ character on the console.
:D

I did a 'emerge -u world' and think I replaced a file. I get the setfont executable not found error on boot and can't start gnome anymore. I checked the file /etc/rc.conf, but don't really know how to change it.

Am I soposed to change the line 'CONSOLEFONT="default8x16" somehow? What should I put? I'm guessing it depends on the fonts I have on my system but not sure.

Thanx,
Stan

I did 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge kbd and that fixed the setfont error, but gdm still won't start up. I type gdm and it frezes for a while, then takes me back to the prompt, then when I type gdm again it says: Gdm already running. Aborting!

I did a emerge -u world but can't remember witch files I replaced, is there a log somewhere I can look at?

Thanx,
Stan

Is this the place for all those who don't pay attention when they're emerging -U  Looks like i'd better go and re-emerge kbd :P

/var/log/emerge.log is where you can find the list. It seems to work in reverse with most recent entries at the bottom.

I did exactly what you suggested, on restarting consolefont I get this and still no £

# /etc/init.d/consolefont restart
* WARNING: you are stopping a boot service.
* Setting user font...
putfont: PIO_FONT: Invalid argument [ ok ]

Commenting out "CONSOLETRANSLATION" and restarting the service also gives this warning.

Any suggestions?

I do not know what the, "PIO_FONT invalid argument" is all about. Up to that point it looks good.

I did the same thing on a fresh Gentoo build just two days ago because I could not get the £ char in irssi (irc) on the console, and it was fine.

I am using kbd 1.0.8-r4 the same as you.

I have googled for that error and all I can find is a vague reference to setfont.

ok thanks for having a look mate.

Aso If I run setfont directly if will come up with this warning.

Looking on google quite a few people have had similar issues with different distros, but they all seem to be international languages whereas I'm using good old English UK.

setfont is referred to in the consolefont script, which appears in /etc/init.d and /etc/runlevels/boot (in my system).
However, the reference is made to /bin/setfont - and my setfont executable is in /usr/bin/setfont
Easy way to solve the problem: copy /usr/bin/setfont to /bin/setfont
But is this "the right way"?

Well, if you copy it there, and thats what its looking for, then it will work, yes, but the right way? I presume this could be a problem (or change) in the ebuild that moves the packages intall directory to a new location. Best bet would be to contact the ebuild maintainer/s. If you wanna occupy less space, create a sym link istead of copying.

same here with a "de" keymap.

Neither do my umlauts (or AltGr, Alt etc) work in console, nor in X. The problem started when emerging world a few days ago I believe..

Looks like when you emerge current "kbd" version, it does create a sym link from /usr/bin/setfont to /bin/setfont.
