Any MUD fans out there? I'm looking for a GUI mud client.
The one that comes with Gnome just doesn't fit the bill for me. Crashes alot too.
Thanks |

I've done some searches and found 6 or so options. Not sure that any look promising though.
I'm heading out for the day, but I'll post the links when I get back. |

forget the gui clients.. fire up a terminal and use tinyfugue, you won't find anything as powerful out there period. the scripting language is top-notch.

I have. I don't like it . I'm partial to the GUI interface. I find them much more easy to deal with.
Scrollback works more to my liking. Plus, I like to do other things while logged in. Cut & paste
doesn't work well in console mode either. I like having the client open in the background while I
do other things. If something happens, I can see it and check it out right away. One time I found
a GUI front end for TF, but I forget where.
Thanks for the suggestion though. |

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out. I've been tinkering with tinyfugue, but I just don't think it's going to work. |

I've always been partial to Erwin Andreasen's "mcl". It's command-line, but it has all the features I need in general and it works quite well (even in a transparent aterm).

Hope that helps a little bit. I couldn't find many very decent gui mud clients, aside from one written in TCL/Tk which seemed full-featured though a little buggy. I've since forgotten the name, however :P

OK, I'll give it a look. Unfortunately I think console versions are handicapped by nature. I've not seen one yet that I've liked how they work.
Even in a terminal window. A big part of the problem may just be how far they've developed. Any clients I've found seem fairly young, not to
mention aren't in emerge.
Whats sad is, this could turn out to be a showstopper for Linux and I |

well i've been using tinyfugue for about 12 years and i know it's older than that.. or you could check out tintin++, that's been around forever, http://mail.newclear.net/tintin but is yet another console client.
i'm curious, what are you looking for that's not available in a console client? graphical mapping is about the only thing, but there are scripts out there that will generate text-based graphic maps for muds for tf and tintin++. i've often found the graphical clients to be focused on interface and not features, most important for a client for me is the scripting ability, triggers, and speeeed. the rest is all fluff. after all most mud/mush/moo's are text based.

First thing that comes to mind is scrollback. I haven't seen one I liked in a console yet. With tf in particular, the curor jumps back and forth from the
input window (3 lines at bottom) to the output window. Its minor, but a little annoying, and quite possibly could cause death .
I don't mind doing some manual configuration, but consoles tend to be a bit cumbersome in that area. I like to be able to easily select a font and size,
colors etc. Scripts for triggers, highlights and whatever I don't mind being more manual.
Another tf example, is keybindings/mappings or whatever. Other clients I have seen seperate the keypad from other keys. Keypad PgUp is different
than the PgUp key elsewhere. Similar to Keypad arrow keys and the solo 4 arrow keys on many keyboards. I haven't dug deep enough to find out if tf
can recognize these keys independantly of each other.
Speed seems to be another issue. With tf, I've made a big step in that area by changing my TERM variable (thanks jspectre), but it still isn't quite right.
I can live with it if I'm able to resolve the other issues. Most probably have a solution. I think the jumping cursor problem is more of a "feature" than
something changealbe though.
MUDix didn't seem to have any speed issues, but I wasn't running it in a terminal window. I don't think MUDix is configurable enough though.
In the end, much of it is ease of use with the exception of a couple of issues. I think that covers it. (not to mention the font issues I'm having with
linux in general. even after following many in depth instructions in another thread) |

UPDATE:
For font reasons, I started Gnome again instead of Fluxbox. Fonts look much better, and speed seems to have improved a tad with tf. |

If anyone is interested...
Just on a whim, I tried setting TERM=vt102. A very big speed improvement.
Probably about as fast as I've seen any client. |

I would recommend this first and foremost. Interface is great, and MUD inheritance simply rules. |

God I couldn't stand zmud. It was always crashing on me. For windows I HIGHLY recommend mudmaster. Actually now that I think about it you could probably get cygwin and use mcl anyway. Wish I had thought of it when I was mudding. |

zmud worked perfectly for me...never crashed
and scripting for it was easy...had custom stuff for each class etc(was damn useful for alchemists...shitloads of aliases needed) |
