I recently installed gentoo and while trying to get everything working the way I wanted, I broke something. I now get the following error when running "Open volume control" in the gnome volume control applet:
Code:
Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found

This is very recent and it has worked before giving me originally 4 mixers:
- for my integrated sound card: alsa and oss
- for my modem: alsa and oss

Not long ago, I added "-oss" in the use flags of my make.conf and recompiled world to take this into account (emerge --newuse world). I tested the mixer as soon as the emerge was complete to notice that the 2 oss mixers had dissappeared. I don't know if I have looked at this after a reboot before noticing that the mixer had dissappeared.

And finally, sound works fine, alsamixer works and I can modify the sound level using the gnome volume control applet. I just can't open the mixer anymore... Does anyone know what is going on???

it works! The gstreamer registry was broken (or empty, don't know) probably due to the emerge --newuse. Anyways, this did the trick:
Code:
gst-register-0.8

thanks! I had the same problem on my box, and your register command fixed it! Anyone have any idea why this happens?

Another thanks, I just changed kernel from 2.6.5 to 2.6.8-r3 and some how lost sound in the process. But that command fixed all.
