Hi everyone:
I am attempting to install Gentoo as a way to learn a little more about Linux. Right now I am running FC1 on an old P2 400 and I wish to get rid of it and install Gentoo. I have 2004.1 live-cds, both the universal and the minimal and everytime I boot with the gentoo or gentoo-nofp kernel it gives me this:

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000286
printing eip:
*pde = 00000000
Oops: 0000
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[<00000286>] Not tainted
EFLAGS: 00010082

After that it gives me a whole bunch of addresses and then

Bad EIP Value
<0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Then it locks completely and I have to turn it off with the power button. I have MD5d and tried these CDs on other computers and they work fine, but I would really like to get it going on this particular computer! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Eric

There are other options you can pass the livecd kernels. Try some of those.

Have you tried the SMP kernel? That might work better, even if you don't have SMP.

well, I am trying the 2004.0 CD right now, and it is going through the hardware detection, and is a little further than it was before, so lets see what that does.

and I am at the root prompt! I dont know why this didnt work last night but i sure did try it.
