Good day;

Recently decided to re-try Gentoo (Been using SuSe, and Mandrake mainly-- hey I like change ). :) Anyway, I downloaded the Universal LiveCD, burnt it and booted it. I got an error. (I'll reprint the screen at the end). Thinking I may have got a corrupt iso, I downloaded and checked the checksum.. it came out correct. I downloaded the universal LiveCD from another mirror, and got the same result. Then I tried the minimal LiveCD(All 2004.0 versions btw) and got the same error as the other two CD's.

The screen shot is as follows:

IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling driver
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
Freening initrd memory: 1658k freed
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystm) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 120k freed

Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.

/bin/ash: can't access tty: job control turned off
/newroot # usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
<flashing cursor here>

Carrying on with the handbook is impossible from this point because no commands are found. (IE: adsl-setup gives /bin/ash/adsl-setup: not found)

typing help shows the following:

Built-in commands:
. : alias bg break cd chdir continue eval exec exit export false
fg hash help jobs kill let local pwd read readonly return set
shift times trap true type ulimit umask unalias unset wait

typing exit (I thought maybe it was stuck in a loop-- couldn't change terminals via alt-F#) gave the following:

STEP 5a2: filing filesystem
cd: 272: can't cd to /newroot/mnt/cdrom//ziofs
cp: etc: No such file or directory
cp: root: No such file or directory
cp: home: No such file or directory
cp: var: No such file or directory
STEP 5c: redirect console
STEP 6: pivot_root and exec/chroot real init
/linuxrc: 313: [: not found
/linuxrc: 313: [: not found
exec: 320: chroot: not found
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

This leaves the computer locked with the caps lock light and the scroll lock light on the keybord flashing.

I've tried previously using the 1.4 LiveCD's and it worked, so I'm fairly certain that the computer is compatible.

My hardware is:

Athlon XP 1600+
1024 meg DDR 2700 RAM
ATI 9700 Pro Video Card (4X AGP)
Creative Labs Live 5.1 Sound Card (With Live Drive IR)
HP dvd-writer 100i
Plextor PX-708A DVD +/- R +/- RW
10/100 ethernet pci card
USB mouse
ps/2 keyboard
mfc 6800 printer/scanner/fax(usb)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't tried. I know the v. 1.4 CD boots properly.

I'll give it a try with my laptop tonight.

Thanks for the advice.

If you have an older LiveCD that works and you have internet access, then you are all set to install Gentoo.

Just boot with the CD, setup your partitions and filesystems as needed, download a 2004.0 stage tarball and a recent portage snapshot from the mirrors, and install as usual. This method also works from non-Gentoo bootable CDs (like KNOPPIX).

hmm... wierd, i have the same kernel panic, although i get lots of hex output beforehand, but i installed using 1.4_rc4, and i KNOW my computer is compatible, i have installed 3 times on the same box. i think my problem comes from 2.6.5-mm sources though. just thought i would add my current experiances.

Ok.. It's official.... I'm confused. I tried to use the 2004.0 LiveCD on my laptop.... It worked fine.

So when the install on the desktop failed (Permissions for /boot didnt allow RW causing grub install and lilo install to fail???) I tried it on the desktop again.. It worked. So here I am again trying to install Gentoo over the bones of SuSe 8.2 (Left the file system alone, just formatted each partition and mounted each dev as required and made the var partition chmod 1777)

If I succeed I'll mention it here.. If I fail.. I may get a tad preturbed.

Wish me luck.

P.S.: Fstab requires the /var, /opt, /usr devices mentioned if they are on different devices then the root & boot drives correct?

Well I officially give up. The network connection came up but went nowhere, so I tried a reboot to sort it out.. and guess what.. Back to the initial error.

I'm on totally different hardware to you, but I had exactly the same problems-job control turned off, commands not working, kenel panic at shutdown, everything.

Seems that the LiveCD didn't like my DVD +/- R/RW drive. Changed to the HP dvd100i and it booted.... now to see if it will carry on to the end..

And the lack of a network connection.. Well I'm a tad brain dead it seems and didn't bother reading the screen for adsl-setup.. Seems there was a minor change between v. 1.4 and v. 2004.0.... Color me embarrassed.. Attempt six or seven is now on-going.

I just did an install on a Eurocom notebook using the 1.4 cd I have used to install many systems. After the install while trying to boot the machine on its own I get this:

Code:
STEP 5c: redirect console
mknod: /newroot/dev/console: No such file or directory
/linuxrc: 277: cannot open /newroot/dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

This is my first time using the 2.6.3-gentoo-r1 sources, so I am going to try a different one and see if that helps, i will post back with the results.

Nope, tried MM sources, same problem.

I just tried the 2004.0 Universal LiveCD and got the same errors about zisofs, causing it to default into BusyBox.

It seems the script mounts /newroom/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 as the installation media, regardless of which CD drive you're booting, so using your master CD drive would solve the problem in many cases.

Same here. I tried to boot my laptop with 2004.1, and it does not work. Samething happened when using 1.4
What I did is install mandrake in my hard partition for /home and then "fdisk /", mount, chroot, and start from step 5 in the installation handbook.

Any ideas? I think it's the cd-rom problem (pcmcia)... I used dopcmcia

For what it's worth...

Ran into this same issue myself earlier with the 2004.1 Universal LiveCD. Tried again with the 2004.0 Universal LiveCD (which hadn't had any problems previously on the hardware in question)...same error.

Found this thread, read through it, and in light of Anthem's advice, decided to remedy the one variable which had changed since my last install: I pulled the UT2K4 disc out of my DVD-ROM (I boot from another CD-RW drive) and all worked as expected. The moral? If you have multiple drives, either place the LiveCD in your primary drive or make sure all the others are empty...
