Which version of KDE?

Can you play mp3 using noatun?

Is your sound server up? (arts)

I use kde 3.0.3, this is a new gentoo 1.4rc1 installation.

I use ALSA and is working. I can play mp3 with Kaboodle. The sound is working in KDE.
But, Noatun can't play my mp3. Strange ! And konqueror still crashing.

Hi!

on my newly compiled system:
gentoo linux 1.4rc1
kde 3.0.3
kernel sound (sb live)

i have the same problem: leftclicking an mp3 file (audio, video) lets konqueror crash. mp3-playing with kaboodle and noautun works. the preview function (mouseover) of konqueror is working perfectly for audio and video.

Thanks for your help!

arts and kdemultimedia are sensitive about optimization flags. try to recompile them with -O2 -pipe only

Well, I cannot speak of 3.0.3, but it works on 3.0.7 (3.1beta1)

Anyway, it won' t work with -fframe-omit-pointer at all (I' ve tried!)

Just a last effort, do you have artsd being initialized when KDE starts? Sorry, but I cannot help you more than that. If you desire to change to KDE 3.1beta1, it is usually very stable (I just have problems when changing appearence configurations, Kwin dies and I have to restart it from a konsole).

Question for readers...

How many of you have installed a clean install of Gentoo 1.4 RC1 and KDE 3.0.3 and have this trouble ??
Or when you click on MPEG or MP3 in konqueror, everything works perfect ??

I don't like this trouble :(

I search for the solution of this bug...

Thanks !

maybe you have to emerge konqueror again, after recompiling kdemultimedia and arts

I've got the same problem with my kde 3.0.3 on gentoo 1.4. but there is one thing that wasn't mentioned above which could perhaps help solve the problem: these crashes occur only when logged in as a user, when logged in as root everything works fine.
question to the pro's: could this be a lack of user-rights?

i don't think that recompiling kde or any of its libraries would solve the problem, because when logged in as root everything works!

did anybody with this problem try as root or only as a user?

UP-THE-X's!

Maybe it is something with /tmp... try to erase everything there.

I have the same trouble with Root or User. Maybe is ALSA problem ?
Just for info: Noatun doesn't work, when i want to play mp3 file, nothing appear, no sound.

From kdemultimedia-3.0.3 ebuild:

---------

"WARNING: alsa support has been removed becuase of a bug in kdemm sources. For further information see bug #2324 on bugs.gentoo.org and bug #39574 on bugs.kde.org. Meanwhile, you can use the alsa oss emulation."

---------

Nah, the default method ALSA emerges with here on Gentoo ( iirc ) allows legacy applications ( in fact, most applications ) to access ALSA via the /dev/dsp OSS-Look-a-like interface. What it's trying to say is that K is going to use the soundcard without any special ALSA features / and / or trickery.

yeah im having the same trouble when opening a mp3 file. but noatun does work fine when i open a file from within noatun... there seems to be nothing wrong with the sound but most likely a bug in konqueror.

I have the same bug with with both mp3 and mpg files and find that logging in as root does not fix the problem...one way to avoid the crashes is not to use konquerors embeded viewer, ie

in settings->Configure konqueror
choose "file associations"
for audio and video groups in the "left click action" box select "show file in seperate viewer"

this opens audio/video formats in the default viewers instead of in a konqueor window

Note: one can do this for the individual file types but I was unsure of whether other audio/video formats crashed konqueror...)

I too had the same problem... I "fixed" it by MIDDLE clicking on MP3's and videos.

This opens the default viewer instead of trying to view it with a kpart in konquerer.

This fixes it _for now_ for me. I am sure it will be better when 3.1 comes out in a month.

On a side note:

Why doesn't everyone use Noatun for their media player??? I am always hearing about XMMS blah blah. Noatun plays everything (Music and Videos)- has lots of skins and plugins - starts quickly - and has small footprint.

I think it is a GREAT player - anyone else feel the same?

I think one reason why people might not use it as much is that the default skin is PLAIN and UGLY. Just use the kjofol plugin and get some skins and it makes it much better.

Try this, it worked for me:
in file associations select mp3 and you get a list of what applications you have associated to mp3 files, but in the upper right corner you can see a tab named Embedding, select that tab and remove "Embedded media player" from the services preferences order. I hope you understand how you shall do and that it works.

My main reason is drag n drop doesn't work in Noatun and that's how I play everything.

Malakin:

Noatun works fine with drag and drop with me. What are you trying to do with it??

It works to both:

A) Select bunch of files and just drop them on the interface (they will automatically get added to the end of the playlist)

B) Open the play list and drag files to the exact position you want them in.

I am dragging out of Konquerer - but I can't imagine what else you would be dragging out of....

I have found a solution for this problem; update KDE. Emerge the latest release. I had the same problem with 3.0.3 and I tried everything, it wouldn't go away. Just finished installing 3.1 beta2 and it fixed the problem. Also, it rocks. :)
