It was tagged in the 26th-27th, and it's even on ftp.kde.org, but it hasn't been officially announced yet. It will be tommarow or thursday.

In the absence of an official ebuild, does anyone have one that will let me try this out without losing KDE3.1? I'd like to try it out but only when I have spare time; I'd rather stick to 3.1 for stability while I work!

If this is happening in KDM, try genkdmconf --no-old, from the command line. That fixes the problem where you can log in, but never get to KDE.

If you like, see this thread. The binaries work very well, save me about 16 hours, and the current build is beta 1. It will also not interfere with 3.1.x.

I think you need to reread the release schedule fro KDE 3.2:

From KDE 3.2 release schedule
Code:

Sunday October 26th, 2003: Preparing Beta1
The HEAD branch is tagged as Beta 1 and is frozen for nonurgent commits. Tarballs are released to the packagers.

So, the code was frozen and sendt out for packaging and compilation on the platforms they offer binary builds for. Normally this should mean that the source is available sometime this week or week-end.

Something tells me those beta packages are way behind schedule, still no release :(

I'm waiting for them for a new Gentoo installation....damn this is annoying ;)

Can the beta happily live alongside KDE 3.1.4? I.e. if I install the beta, will I be able to continue to use KDE 3.1.4 for work, and switch to 3.2 beta 1 just to play around? Do I have to do anything special to do this?

AFAIK it does :)

It makes a dir. named kde3.2 instead of 3.1, which would contain all your settings ed. :)

So not to worry, you can just install :P

I did emerge sync, andthe new kde is in portage, but I get the following- what do I need to do to install 3.2.0beta1?? I presently have 3.1.4 on my test box, and 3.1.3 on my main box. I must not be understanding the correct procedure here- can somebody please post detailed intructions for us amateurs? My test box is ~x86 all the way, and I never have any problems (so far). Also run 2.6 kernels, and gcc 3.3.2-r2.

Thanks,
wrc1944

The KDE version you will be using will be determined by your $PATH environment variable. I.e., the first one in $PATH will be used...

The new KDE will add itself to the beginning of $PATH, so after installation it will be used by default. Switching back and forth is thus a matter of editing $PATH (e.g. /etc/profiles).

Why must you do everything the hard way?

XSESSION=kde-<vers> startx

vers=the ebuild version, ie 3.1.4, 3.2.0_beta1(i think) for the official beta, and 5 for the cvs.

this works with every WM/DE that has an entry in /etc/X11/Sessions/, which is almost all of the ones in portage except xpde. this is assuming you havent modified your .xinitrc. if you have, delete it (or remame it) and startx will use /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
