hi,
I recently suffered from a harddrivecrash , I had a backup so a lot of things were restored. I took a tarball and compiled gentoo from stage 1.
I used my old kernel (2.6.4) with the modules.
now my system boots fine but when I get to the login part and I type in my username and pass I get this error :
Quote: |
login(pam_unix)[4912]:authentication failure; logname=uid=0 euid=0 tty=/dev/vc/1 ruser= rhost = user=root
login[4912]:FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM /dev/vc/1 FROM ROOT,authentication failure
login incorrect
|
anyone knows what this error is all about ?
thx & grtz

Did you copy your passwd file from before the crash, or did you manually add your username again? Copying passwd files can get messy...I'd recommend manually adding users. _________________ Gentoo...it's like wiping your ass with silk. Or sandpaper. |

For some reason its not accepting your password. What you can do is boot off the live cd and chroot and reset your root password. Once you do that, reboot, and then login as root. Then reset the passwords for the other accounts, and the machine should be useable again.

Hmm, did you reset the password for yourself or the root user?

Have you tried booting from the livecd, chroot'ing then removing the pw from /etc/shadow and logging in with no pw, then changing once logged in? Ive done this before on solaris but havent tried it on gentoo, it may be something to try............ _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php
