Here is the log from the Rage3d chat that took place earlier today;

http://www.zen58308.zen.co.uk/ati_linuxlog.txt

Finally getting their act together :D :D :D The december release is going to be a bombshell 8)

What I REALLY like is that their codebase will, as of the december release be the same as the 4.11 Windows release!

The chat was certainly... interesting.

I think it was more fun watching #atilinuxq for the questions then it was watching #rage3d for the answers :p

Theres a few questions that were asked, that I would've like to know the answer to, but oh well, there's only so much you can fit into an hour.

To summerise:
AMD64 Support december release
Xorg 6.8 december release
Multiple X Servers will be supported eventually
Installer they're working on it
Composite when it's matured and the code stabalised, they'll support it.
Xgl see Composite answer
Development team they know the numbers, but didn't specify (roughly proportianal to the market), but resources HAVE increased in the last year.
Reputation They are very concerned with their reputation, and as such are going to keep linux users more informed from now on.
ACPI: They're working on it, but linux is still evolving in that area.

Hopefully that was complete, and mostly correct. I'm confident in seeing things change now (more than before when all I had were rumours). Hopefully ATI will prove me right!!

We'll see how the drivers turn out.
If they really do use the windows codebase (however they achieve this) then the release will be pretty sweet.

I am just having some doubts here....for month nothing really happened and now they want to release that ueber driver?
Let's hope they just focused on this release and that's why they didn't release any good linux drivers in the past month.

Theres been some talk on the xorg mailing lists about creating an X server which uses OpenGL to draw, rather than using the 2D hardware. I'm assuming this is similar to whatever Microsoft has planned for longhorn, I'm not sure of the details of m$'s implementation though.

Link to the start of the Xgl thread.

But would drawing in OpenGL be really faster?
I know not that many people care about power consumption but I do and using 3D will suck more power for sure.
And as long as there are no power saving options even when 3D is used I would suggest doing that.
Or is there something I missed?

I just hope these guyz really make up for their words.
64-Bit xorg6.8 support would be pretty damn nice for my new AMD64 with a 9700pro :D

"But would drawing in OpenGL be really faster?"

Answer: Yes. It would, in theory, allow the Xorg maintainers to hardware accelerate all the X11 operations [apparently XAA only accelerates some operations - and not necessarily the most useful ones].

Linux being as fast or faster than windows in every way, plus 6.8 support... Excited!

Very good news for me as a AMD64 user with a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.

No AIW support ... there will never be any in Linux, oh well I should have expected that. :(

At the moment they are all suggestions... not even promises.

I have hope that the Decemeber release will be very good, but I am not holding my breath. ATI's track record is NOT good...

I degraded to xorg 6.7 to try out Doom3 with these new drivers and can't play it for more than 1 or 2 minutes before it locks up and I have to kill my X session to regain control.

As each release comes out, I get more and more pesimistic about the future of ATI and Linux.... I can only hope Nvidia's efforts shame and humiliate ATI into action.
