I'm a fb newbie, so I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I can't figure it out. I've followed all the directions I can find about vesafb, and it seems to work because I can use vga=ask and specify 317 as my mode and it loads fine.

However, if I use vga=317 in grub.conf the screen goes blank after the grub menu closes and won't come back.

Also, fbset tells me that /dev/fb0 doesn't exist. Anyone have suggestions?

I have the same problem, and my card is an S3 ViRGE DX.

I think that's because the mode that I select at boot time isn't a fbmode.

The mode that I choose at boot time is 7, so I changed the boot line to vga=7, and it works.

I think you're selecting a number from the second column instead of the first.

Good luck,
Ricardo Cordeiro :)

vga=0x317 video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr mem=nopentium

enter that and see what happens , add it to the kernel line in grub

this is assuming you have vesa compiled into your kernel not modularized

Will this work with a AMD K6-2 3D stepping 0. I ask this, because I don't have mtrr, and I don't yet understand the video string.
Can you point me to any documents on the subject?
Glad for being helped back.

Check in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb I believe.

I don't know what the mtrr thing is for, but the ywrap allows for scrolling back through the framebuffer.

Rommel: Thanks for the advice. I'll be trying it as soon as I get back home :)

I think your main problem might be missing the 0x on the mode number. Try just that first.

Good luck

I added the 0x and the mem= options, and it worked like a charm! What exactly does the mem= line do?

Slightly off topic, but regarding RAM, do I have to specify how much I have in grub.conf? i.e. mem=512M or whatever?

Thanks for everyone's help :)

mem tells how much memory you have. But you shouldn't need to inform it in new kernels. Are you sure you really need it?
