Did the basic Gentoo install and booted into Gentoo Linux, but I don't have a working NIC. Can somebody tell me what module I need for a basic Ultra-5, how to check for it, and how to load it?

Went back and checked the install. It had me compile the network stull into the kernel, right? The Sun Happy Meal 10/100baseT support option, right?

ifconfig -a does not give me the "UP" and "RUNNING" words.

Any ideas?

The driver is called 'sunhme' and the option you selected is correct. Did you plug in a Cat5? ;)

If you are sure its no physical problem (broken onboard NIC?), post the network part of your kernel config.

Oh, and did you setup '/etc/conf.d/net' and run '/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start'?

And, you might check dmseg: You should see something like
Code:

sunhme.c:v2.01 26/Mar/2002 David S. Miller (davem@redhat.com)
eth0: HAPPY MEAL (PCI/CheerIO) 10/100BaseT Ethernet 00:03:ba:01:a2:78

(With the second line corrected to reflect where the hme card lives on U5.)

(That's "dmesg" -- I never type it right.)

You were right bazik, I missed the setup of /etc/conf.d/net. All is okay now. Thanks.
