I tried to activate the alsa volume control widget in KDE 4.12.5

An icon, in the form of a white cross on red bottom appears, instead of the volume control icon. The associated text says
"could not create a python scriptengine for the alsa volume control widget"

The problem seems to be related to python. Here is what I have installed:

Code:

I notice that an Arch user also experienced that error message when trying to install some Plasma widgets (Arch Linux Forums - [SOLVED]Could not create a python script engine) and he solved it by installing the Python bindings for KDE, so I wonder if it would help if you were to re-install pykde4?

Thanks Fitzcarraldo,

I had the same suspicion and re-merged pykde4. Unfortunately this did not help.

Something is not right with alsa though. If I try to test sound with speaker-test -t wav -c 2 I get the following output:

Code:
$ speaker-test -t wav -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.27.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory

More:

Does the the alsa volume control widget in KDE 4.12.5 require any additional packages other than the ones I have installed:

Code:
dev-python/pyalsa
media-libs/alsa-lib
media-libs/alsa-oss
media-plugins/gst-plugins-alsa
media-sound/alsa-tools
media-sound/alsa-utils
sys-firmware/alsa-firmware

Yes, your speaker-test result is definitely wrong. Here's what I get:

Code:
$ speaker-test -t wav -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.28

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels

Have you tried other KDE audio mixer widgets instead of KMix, such as Veromix (it's in the kde and sabayon overlays) and QasTools?:

Also, have you tried fiddling around in PulseAudio Volume Control, as I sometimes found in previous KDE releases that it helped when audio stopped working (just toggling Mute sometimes did the trick)?:

Also, did you see this response in another thread?:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7504612.html#7504612

The OP in that thread experienced the same error message as you when he ran speaker-test, so perhaps that thread might be of help.

Thanks fitzcarraldo for shareing your configuration.

It seems we have the same packaged installed, exept that I do not have pulseaudio (which I do not beleive is neccessary).

I tried the following, which strangely enough executed allright, but with no sound output.

Code:
# speaker-test -c 2 -r 48000 -D hdmi:0,1

speaker-test 1.0.27.2

Playback device is hdmi:0,1
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 32 to 8192
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.632033
 0 - Front Left
^C 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 1.656229

In /etc/conf.d/modules I do have

Code:
modules_3="snd_hda_intel"
module_snd_hda_intel_args="index=2"

However, same error with:

Code:
# speaker-test -t wav -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.27.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
