I have been using Thunderbird mail client for a long time to connect to our company's Dovecot IMAP server.

The directory structure is:
/.INBOX
/.INBOX.Archives
/.INBOX.Drafts
/.INBOX.Junk
/.INBOX.Sent
/.INBOX.Templates
/.INBOX.Trash

Since updating from Thunderbird 31.7 to 31.8, Thunderbird automatically creates a second (unwanted) Trash folder:

/.INBOX
/.INBOX.Archives
/.INBOX.Drafts
/.INBOX.Junk
/.INBOX.Sent
/.INBOX.Templates
/.INBOX.Trash
/.Trash <--- Unwanted Folder

This is very annoying.

How can I prevent that Thunderbird 31.8 and higher automatically creates this unwanted Trash Folder.

Account Settings, Server Settings, "When I delete a message:"
Move it to this folder:

Is set to: "Trash on user@exsample.com"
Same like "Sent, Draft, etc.

When I delete a message, it's is moved to "/.INBOX.Trash" as it should be.

Thunderbird 31.7 and older versions work fine.

This appears to be a new "Feature".

I can't reproduce that at work (tb 31.8, CentOS), and I haven't upgraded my Gentoo machine yet, still using 31.7 there.

TB 31.7 always worked fine. The problem with the unwanted Trash Folder started when the bug and security fixes where made to 31.7 and version changed to 31.8.

TB 31.8 required a small change of my IMAP server's configuration, deletion of ~./cache/thunderbird and ~/. thunderbird and re-creation of all mail account in TB.

TB 38.1 tested on OpenSuse 13.2 still creates the unwanted Trash folder. Have not tested TB 38.1 on Gentoo. My OpenSuse Laptops now annoy me every hour with demanding that I upgrade to TB 38.1. I wish I could get Gentoo to work on my family's 4 laptops!
