Hi guys, got this strange block here while trying to emerge mplayer (mplayer2 doesn't like pulseaudio as it seems). Any ideas?
Code:

emerge smplayer

[ebuild  N     ] media-video/mplayer2-2.0_p20131009  USE="X alsa bluray cdio dvd dvdnav enca gif iconv jpeg lcms libass mmx mng mp3 network opengl png postproc pulseaudio quvi shm sse sse2 ssse3 symlink threads unicode v4l vcd vdpau xinerama xscreensaver xv -3dnow -3dnowext (-altivec) (-aqua) -bs2b -cddb -cpudetection -debug -directfb -doc -dvb -ftp -ipv6 -jack -joystick -ladspa -libcaca -lirc -md5sum -mmxext -oss -pnm -portaudio -pvr -radio -samba (-selinux) -tga -yuv4mpeg" 0 KiB
[ebuild  N     ] media-video/smplayer-14.3.0  USE="-debug" LINGUAS="de -ar_SY -bg -ca -cs -da -el_GR -en_US -es -et -eu -fi -fr -gl -he_IL -hr -hu -it -ja -ka -ko -ku -lt -mk -ms_MY -nl -pl -pt -pt_BR -ro_RO -ru_RU -sk -sl_SI -sr -sv -th -tr -uk_UA -vi_VN -zh_CN -zh_TW" 3.590 KiB
[blocks B      ] media-video/mplayer ("media-video/mplayer" is blocking media-video/mplayer2-2.0_p20131009)

I don't remember how I got both mplayer and mplayer2 installed, but you could do one of two things:

1. Put the smplayer2 ebuild in a local overlay and edit out the block.

2. Unmerge mplayer, emerge smplayer2, then emerge --nodeps mplayer.

I'd go with option 1. There is no good reason why you can't have them both.

Funny thing: I had mplayer2 and smplayer2 installed and unmerged them. Want to swap them in favour of mplayer and smplayer. That block is all that's coming up. I don't really want both in parallel...

Did you try?
Code:
emerge -1 mplayer && emerge smplayer

That does seem rather weird. What version of mplayer do you have? The output doesn't mention version, but the package only, which seems odd... It's as if all of its versions would block the specific mplayer2 version...

Even so, I have these three without any issues installed right now:

Code:
media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20130729
media-video/mplayer2-2.0_p20131009
media-video/smplayer-14.3.0

I never tried smplayer2 yet, as I just made smplayer use mplayer2 instead. Never looked into what smplayer2 does, really... but the point is being that, mplayer shouldn't, to my knowledge, block mplayer2.

If I do that, it will just try to pull in mplayer2! So weird. At least the blocker is gone then, but still not doing what I want.

Btw, versions are latest in portage. My system runs ~amd64...

In the smplayer ebuild you have the condition
Code:
RDEPEND="${DEPEND}
   || (
      media-video/mplayer[bidi,${COMMON_USE}]
      media-video/mplayer2[${COMMON_USE}]
   )"
