This is a new Gentoo install, recent (yesterday) world update. I'm running XFCE.

It takes forever (on the order of minutes) to bring up the "log out" menu in XFCE. This is the menu where the user is able to select "reboot", "hibernate", "suspend", etc.

This was not an issue before, and is not an issue on a very similar other system that I have, also running Gentoo stable, with XFCE.

What is the cause of this, and how do I fix it?

That menu is an XDG auto generated menu. Did you modified the xdg menu files into /etc/xdg/menus?

I don't know with XFCE, but KDE is very sensitive in that regard. If you made a symlink here, you should remove it, other desktop are fine, but kbuildsycoca4 will run forever at 100% cpu and eat all your ram with a symlink in /etc/xdg/menus. Maybe xfce have some kind of a similar issue.

Or maybe a problem in ~/.config/menus

Just curious; if you downgrade to sys-apps/dbus-1.8.4, does the problem go away?

The log out menu will check if you have authorization for reboot/shutdown from ConsoleKit or systemd-logind. So, if you use ConsoleKit, does the command `ck-list-sessions` when you execute it in a X11 terminal as a normal user, tell that your user is "active = TRUE" or not?

As in, any kind of problems with DBUS or ConsoleKit or systemd(-logind) will certainly slow it down.
