Hi,

I am quite new to Gentoo. I had to install an older (10.0) version of Gentoo to be sure is compatible with an out of date app.

I dont have much time trying to experiment with newer versions, to see if the app will work fine, I just want to install Gentoo 10.0 because this is definitely compatible with my app (as is already installed on other servers).

Question is: where I do find older Gentoo versions ? I cant see anything on mirrors, the oldest is 10.1 livecd. I am not sure if is possible to install 10.1 just using livecd (I dont see some stage3 for 10.1) but anyway, I want safest to use 10.0.

Any tip ?

Well, first of all Gentoo doesn't have versions. Gentoo is based on a rolling release.

You might possibly be able to use the live DVD to get an install that old as I believe it includes the software.

However, an install that old is completely unmaintainable and will be full of security holes. No clean update path will exist between that install and an up to date system. You also won't be able to use portage.

You time and energy would be better spent trying to see if your application will run on a new system or looking into some distribution that still maintains installs old enough to run your application.

You're probably SOL here due to the floating version of Gentoo. At best you could grab a snapshot of the portage tree then, but getting the individual software packages will be difficult at best. You may need to locate someone with an old box to clone or another Linux from circa that timeperiod. If you can simply use the livecd or livedvd (which I'm not certain if you can use those to install a system with) then that may be your best bet.

I found this guide that NeddySeagoon wrote a while ago dealing with the livedvds: http://dev.gentoo.org/~neddyseagoon/HOWTO_DVD11.xml

The question is, how much of the OS do you need to get it to work...

And...

It may be easier to see if it works on a fresh system.
