I'm trying to follow the wiki for this, but have one question: is running aticonfig a must in order to get the fglrx drivers working? Around this forum there's lots of talk about not needing a xorg.conf for most configurations.

fglrx is a proprietary driver; autoconfig is only for X's own drivers.

I understand that fglrx is a proprietary driver, and aticonfig is a program that comes with the installation of the ati-drivers package. I was just wondering if it was required.

yes you need to provide an xorg.conf if you use fglrx, though in my experience ive had much much more problems with fglrx, the likes of kernel panics, and the like, compared to radeon drivers.

The fglrx and the proprietary nvidia driver both require a run of their configuration utilities to create xorg.conf files.

running aticonfig --initial will provide a xorg.conf for fglrx that exceeds the minimum required - a device section.
My experience with fglrx has been very very good. YMMV.

Binary ati drivers are for performance, not for stability. I have had some crashes I'm pretty sure came from it (hey, what else would be able to crash the whole system?), but unfortnately sometimes you want features that pick one driver above the other for you. Like, I odn't think radeon driver can handle opencl which is supported by a lot of GPUs and with fglrx works fine
