So, I finally have a GUI running now! I went the long way round, doing only the plain 64-bit AMD Desktop install first. Then I thought installing the kde meta would get everything else up and running... but no, I had to put in the x-server too, then fiddle with a few other things to make the GUI come up. Before that I was able to get to it by first doing "startx" which complained about something but then when I entered kdm it would come up. I finally did an "rc-update add xdm default" which now gets me to the GUI login ...

I know there are likely places in the rc scripts that need to be reviewed and corrected. Anyone have some tips about where to look and what should be done next?

NEW: The warning message I get in its own pop-up is:

Code:
Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
[ OK ]

The console login before the graphical login is normal and expected. If you want to have graphics before the graphical login (xdm or kdm) launches you have to install something like media-gfx/splashutils. I have nothing like that installed, so maybe somebody else can give you hints about that.

Thank you Abe,

If it's normal, then I don't care to make more changes. I'll add some new installs/features to the system later.
