Hi Fellow Forum Members,

My brother did install a the stratum-mining-proxy by hand (no emerge) and i think it killed my Python installation. The stratum-mining-proxy does not have any uninstall routine and he thinks the install failed anyway.

First i did not notice anything wrong but then i wanted the start iotop. I dont get the usual "gui" but this:

Code:

kobold manuel # iotop
error: No urls, filenames, or requirements specified (see --help)

Code:

kobold manuel # iotop --help

Global options:
  --verbose (-v)  run verbosely (default)
--quiet (-q)    run quietly (turns verbosity off)
  --dry-run (-n)  don't actually do anything
--help (-h)     show detailed help message
--no-user-cfg   ignore pydistutils.cfg in your home directory

Options for 'easy_install' command:
  --prefix                       installation prefix
  --zip-ok (-z)                  install package as a zipfile
--multi-version (-m)           make apps have to require() a version
--upgrade (-U)                 force upgrade (searches PyPI for latest
                                 versions)
--install-dir (-d)             install package to DIR
--script-dir (-s)              install scripts to DIR
  --exclude-scripts (-x)         Don't install scripts
--always-copy (-a)             Copy all needed packages to install dir
--index-url (-i)               base URL of Python Package Index
--find-links (-f)              additional URL(s) to search for packages
--delete-conflicting (-D)      no longer needed; don't use this
--ignore-conflicts-at-my-risk  no longer needed; don't use this
  --build-directory (-b)         download/extract/build in DIR; keep the
                                 results
--optimize (-O)                also compile with optimization: -O1 for
"python -O", -O2 for "python -OO", and -O0 to
                                 disable [default: -O0]
--record                       filename in which to record list of installed
                                 files
--always-unzip (-Z)            don't install as a zipfile, no matter what
--site-dirs (-S)               list of directories where .pth files work
--editable (-e)                Install specified packages in editable form
  --no-deps (-N)                 don't install dependencies
  --allow-hosts (-H)             pattern(s) that hostnames must match
--local-snapshots-ok (-l)      allow building eggs from local checkouts
--version                      print version information and exit
  --no-find-links                Don't load find-links defined in packages
                                 being installed
  --user                         install in user site-package
                                 '/root/.local/lib64/python2.7/site-packages'

usage: iotop [options] requirement_or_url ...
   or: iotop --help

When i execute iotop as a user i get clearly python output:

Code:
manuel@kobold /home/manuel $ iotop
error: can't create or remove files in install directory

The following error occurred while trying to add or remove files in the
installation directory:

    [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/test-easy-install-27539.write-test'

The installation directory you specified (via --install-dir, --prefix, or
the distutils default setting) was:

    /usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/

Perhaps your account does not have write access to this directory?  If the
installation directory is a system-owned directory, you may need to sign in
as the administrator or "root" account.  If you do not have administrative
access to this machine, you may wish to choose a different installation
directory, preferably one that is listed in your PYTHONPATH environment
variable.

For information on other options, you may wish to consult the
documentation at:

  http://packages.python.org/distribute/easy_install.html

Please make the appropriate changes for your system and try again.

emerge --info

Code:

kobold manuel # emerge --info

What did i try to fix this:

- reinstall iotop -> no effect
- python-updater -v -> nothing to rebuild, all good
- revdep-rebuild -> nothing to rebuild, all good
- reemerge world -> nothing to rebuild, all good

Code:

kobold manuel # eselect python list
Available Python interpreters:
  [1]   python2.7 *
  [2]   python3.3
kobold manuel #

What I think could fix it, but i dont know the appropriate commands:

- reinstall the whole python environment, so everything who is depended on python and also python itself (can this be safely done ?)

Questions:

- Can i trust emerge as it is also heavily dependent on python?
- Any other Idea to fix this ?
- What is the above command to reinstall everything python related? Does it fix manual/broken python installs

Thanks for your ideas :-D

As always if you need more info, please don't hesitate to ask.

UPDATE:

I solved it by reinstalling all of the python stuff with "emerge -ae python"

(Your brother is having root at that pc?)

Try "emerge -1v dev-lang/python-exec"

easy_install/pip as root seems evil

Hi lagalopex,

Code:

kobold manuel # which iotop
/usr/bin/iotop

kobold manuel # /usr/bin/iotop
error: No urls, filenames, or requirements specified (see --help)
kobold manuel #

He has not anymore access. Biggest mistake i think i made recently.

In cases like this I don't think you can really trust emerge to find what is broken. You might want to use emerge -e @system to rebuild everything. It is a sledge hammer approach to the problem, but one I have found to work quite well when I am not sure exactly what needs to be rebuild/reinstalled. I doubt rebuilding world would be enough since this is a system level problem.

EDIT: I just noticed your comment about rebuilding all of python. The emerge flag you are looking for is -e which basically means rebuild this package and everything it uses. The command would be of the form emerge -ae python.

GenProm,

Just about everything works with Python 3.3. Switch to it as your system python.
Look at roots .bash_history file to see exactly which commands your brother issued as root.

If he installed by hand chances are it went to /usr/local, cleaning up /usr/local may fix your problem (since it comes first on $PATH whatever is there gets picked up before legit stuff from /usr). Just my 2¢.
