I know there was some eselect news about this, and I chose one of the options, my world update went fine.

But why can't I any longer select the "suspend" and "hibernate" options from my logout menu in XFCE? The options are there, visibly, but they are not possible to select. Do I need to be in some new group? Am I missing something else?

As an aside echo "mem" > /sys/power/state works fine.

As another aside, my "logout menu" in XFCE takes now forever to appear. It was not like this before.

What version of xfce4-session and/or xfce4-power-manager? The stable version of Xfce doesn't have the fixes for new upower yet, so there's also the consideration of version numbers, so you'd have to pick ~arch version of Xfce or alternatively use the fallback version of upower-pm-utils.

I've had this issue on and off for months and I go randomly emerging things and rebooting until it works. I've never pinned down exactly what fixes it. Mine still has no idea what suspend and hibernate are, they're greyed out and not options in the drop down menus, but when I close the lid the laptop sleeps so I am happy.

I see, ignore my comment then, if the problem has been around before than past few weeks.

You are most likely suffering from some dbus, consolekit, polkit -type of problems, best I can do is point you to the first post of:

*subscribed*

since updating the xfce4 packages (xfce4-power-manager same 1.3.0) and xfce4-session to 4.11.0* from 4.10.1*

also the options are greyed out :/

so I guess that means going through the thread & steps

thanks ssuominen ! :)
