I tried removing pulseaudio and starting over from scratch, same issue.

It only happens on displayport out. I use displayport to a splitter that goes dvi-d to monitor and coax to my DAC for the stereo. It's worked forever, but now has this chipmunk nonsense. It's like a 44.1 KHz stream is being played back at 48 KHz.

I tried default-sample-rate = 44100 and default-sample-rate = 48000 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf , but no luck.

What can I do to try and troubleshoot & fix this? :(

I tried reinstalling from scratch, same thing, with a configuration from scratch. This is on a Lenovo t440p.

With my t520, the displayport out works perfectly fine for audio playback :(

I solved my problem!

I tried a clean reinstall, and the issue still presented. I tried every configuration, same thing. Then I took the hard drive out of my sandy bridge based thinkpad T520 and put it into my haswell based thinkpad t440p. It works, boots, and the sound issue is still there! But, the sound on this same install/hard drive works fine in the t520.

The only possibility in my mind at this point is that snd_hda_intel in the new kernel doesn't play nice with haswell. I tried 3.14, 3.12, same issue. Then I tried 3.4.93, but it was too old to work with my xf86-video-intel package.

Then I tried going outside portage - something I am doing a lot more often than I am comfortable with this t440p, and got 3.8.13. It works fine! No skipping.

This makes no sense to me that in order to use a more modern chipset's integrated sound, I must use an older kernel. However, it does work, and I consider the problem solved.

edit: apparently there was already a bug on kernel.org that I missed for this.. fail. :(
