Other than this current issue the system seems to be running perfectly.
portage synced and emerge update ran without any errors.

I think you need a legacy driver for that video card, like version 173-* . I'm not even sure version 304 would fit. Now it's not sure either the legacy version will fit recent kernels. In general NVIDIA have [been "kind" enough to] made updates to legacy version but you have to try and see if it works.

EDIT: See Gentoo Wiki.

You cannot run startx in the default configuration, unless you have these packages (xterm and twm) installed.
Either install them or switch your default desktop to something else. http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration#Using_startx

Or avoid startx and use only a display manager through /etc/init.d/xdm.

I installed xterm, twm and xclock.
I get the desired result of of 3 white consoles and the clock on the screen.

I uninstalled xterm, twm and xclock.

Now I ran:
Code:
kdm

I get the kdm greet screen (sign on screen)
I put in username and password of user that is part of the "video" group.
I hit enter I see the nvidia green logo flash for a couple of seconds and after a couple of minutes the sign on scree is back, never started kde.

Help Please, thank you

You don't start kdm like that. The correct way is this:
/etc/conf.d/xdm:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

Code:
# /etc/init.d/xdm start

If kde will not start, you can choose failsafe from kdm session menu, which will only launch xterm. Then you can run "startkde" in the xterm to see which errors you get.

please look at all pertinent setting in my earlier outputs particularly in /etc/portage/make.conf.

Thank you

This set correctly:

/etc/conf.d/xdm:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

Ran:

Code:

Please see line 9 in:
/etc/init.d/../conf.d/modules:

GNU nano 2.3.2       File: /etc/init.d/../conf.d/modules

# You can define a list modules for a specific kernel version,
# a released kernel version, a main kernel version or just a list.
# The most specific versioned variable will take precedence.
#modules_2_6_23_gentoo_r5="ieee1394 ohci1394"
#modules_2_6_23="tun ieee1394"
#modules_2_6="tun"
#modules_2="ipv6"
#modules="ohci1394"
modules_3_12_21-gentoo-r1="nvidia"

# You can give modules a different name when they load - the new name
# will also be used to pick arguments below.
#modules="dummy:dummy1"

# Give the modules some arguments if needed, per version if necessary.
# Again, the most specific versioned variable will take precedence.
#module_ieee1394_args="debug"
#module_ieee1394_args_2_6_23_gentoo_r5="debug2"
#module_ieee1394_args_2_6_23="debug3"

You can't have a '-' character in a variable name, that's why the error message 'command not found'.
Might want to skip the 3_12_21-gentoo-r1 and just say, "modules=..."
The other examples in the file seem to suggest -gentoo-r5 becomes _gentoo_r5.

I don't have nvidia in my /etc/conf.d/modules file however; I think Xorg must modprobe itself, works for me because lsmod shows it loaded.

All the fixes that were suggested were needed and helped but the last thing i tried was looking for "startkde".
I noticed startkde was missing from the system. I don't know if I missed it or somehow it was removed.
I emerged kdebase-startkde.
I now have a beautiful "kdegreet" login screen followed by a beautiful kde fully operational desktop.
the logs are clear of any errors other than minor warnings.
YOU GUYS ARE TERRIFIC. ESPECIALLY: russK, VinzC, franzf and especially chithanh.
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP DURING THIS MADNESS.
Code:
  # emerge kdebase-startkde

All fixed and happy now!!!!!!   "I Love Gentoo"
