I had dev-db/mysql-5.5.35 installed on Jan 19th. Today, I upgraded it to the latest dev-db/mysql-5.5.37-r1. In the process, the /var/run symlink got removed, and that caused all kinds of havoc, until I noticed the problem and restored the symlink.

Looking at http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/eclass/mysql-cmake.eclass?revision=1.10&view=markup (the last revision prior to Jan 19tth), I suppose /var/db/pkg/dev-db/mysql-5.5.35/CONTENTS would have an entry for /var/run. Then, during the unmerge stage of the upgrade today, /var/run was deemed as unnecessary and got removed.

Is this a correct hypothesis? If so, it seems a bit dangerous. I always thought that the main differentiator between gentoo and debian/ubuntu is that software upgrade in the former will not touch any running service. In this case, many running services got screwed
