PostPosted: Thu May 29, 2014 7:54 pm    Post subject: MacBook Pro retina and xorg Reply with quote

After having followed the guide https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration X fails to start on a MacBook Pro retina. I get nothing, except the famous "no screens found" message.

The video/graphics device is the following:

Code:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 750M Mac Edition] (rev a1)

Xorg log:

X is able to start without any configuration file and to somewhat automatically detect what it needs to start. Don't know about Apple hardware but I guess it's the same. Have you tried starting X without any configuration at all?

A bit of background. I have used Linux for the past 12 years or so as my primary operating system. About 10 of those were Gentoo. I also used Red Hat and Kali for work. I tried and liked the UX of elementaryos (on another laptop), but I get tired of Ubuntu, and I am looking to switch back to Linux. Except for a server I just configured on older hardware, I had not set up a Gentoo box in about 6 years, so things are different now, and I am out of the loop. I need some starting resources to try to get this new hardware working. I realize that new hardware and also Macs may not have been the best way to go, but it was my favorite laptop of the ones with Nvidia cards. What I have gotten working is a booting system from SD card. I had wanted to hack together an EFI which the stock Apple boot loader would recognize as Windows then use kernel stub loader. But I installed rEFInd on the hard drive when trying to install it on the SD card. It works and appears to use the kernel stub loader. I could not install grub when I tried.

The setup I desire is to not use the Nvidia card for display. I do not often use external monitors, and I will use OS X for those times. I will exclusively use the open source Intel driver. I need the Nvidia drivers and CUDA toolkit for CUDA. The CUDA documentation explains how to use the .run file that Gentoo gets nvidia-cuda-toolkit from and not interrupt anything with the integrated graphics. When I tried that, I just get a message that I am trying to install on an unsupported system, do I want to continue, and I said no. I do not know why it sees my system as unsupported or where a log file to explain might be located. If I try to use the ebuilds to install, boot hangs on uevents due to the Nvidia driver not loading. Is that something that should be fixed by blacklisting nouveau? I am using it for now since it is the only available (to my knowledge) driver. I am using a MacBookPro11,3, and my X works now. I have looked at:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBookPro11,x#Post_installation

I apparently need to install some utility in OS X then boot a patched grub. I was unable to find if this patch has already been incorporated into regular grub. I got a grub screen which would not load my .efi sometime when booting, but I am not sure where to go from here or if the kernel stub loader is going to successfully keep the Intel card turned on during each boot.

My touchpad is not working in X but is with GPM, so I'm pretty sure I just have synaptics wrong. All Xorg configuration is different from how it was when I last used it. I tried to read the doc on Xorg, and it basically says that everything is supposed to just work. But it isn't. Where do I read about fixing this? Or is the correct approach getting the Intel graphics running, blacklisting nouveau, then it will auto-detect the Intel graphics and use it?
