Normally I can figure these things out but this is driving me nuts and I need the communities help.

My hp 2035 laser printer has been working just fine for years. I tried to update my ~amd64 system and got caught in a morass of blockages due to whatever 64/32 emulation changes have been going on that I haven't figured out yet. Then the printer stopped working. I closed everything, quit X, restarted dbus, reloaded udev but still nothing. The printer still shows up with lsusb:
Code:
lsusb
Bus 001 Device 107: ID 0bb4:0f91 HTC (High Tech Computer Corp.)
Bus 001 Device 012: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 27b8:01ed
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1f75:0902 Innostor Technology Corporation IS902 UFD controller
Bus 001 Device 111: ID 03f0:5d17 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 17f6:0905 Unicomp, Inc
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1a40:0201 Terminus Technology Inc. FE 2.1 7-port Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

hp-setup still sees the printer and I can add it but I can't print test pages or get it to respond to anything.
hp-doctor sees the printer but gives me this:
Code:
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P2035?serial=M412SZT
error: Device not found
error: Communication status: Failed

Turned the printer on/off. Unplugged the usb and plugged it back in. dmesg sees the printer plugged back in. Reinstalled plugins with hp-plugin which always fixed it in the past.

I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Maybe try hp-check, see if it tells you anything useful.

Set LogLevel debug /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
# tail -f /var/log/cups/error_log
You can restart cups, then try and setup the printer on http://localhost:631/

@russK: hp-doctor runs hp-check and gives me the same error as in the first post.

@comprookie2000
I had done that and I don't see anything that means anything to me in the logs.

Did you remove and reconfigure the printer? The wiki page http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/HPLIP#Upgrading suggests this when upgrading, which may have happened when you did your update.

Yes, multiple times.

If I run
Code:
echo "test" > /dev/usb/lp0
the printer light blinks and about a minute or two later it spits out a piece of paper with the word test on it but nothing else I do makes that light blink.
