Good afternoon!

Just got back to Gentoo after about a 3 year hiatus, and I can't remember a darn thing. I've finished installing Gentoo, X and gnome. Unfortunately, after I type startx, it doesn't start. I know it's something small and stupid that I'm missing (hopefully). Here is the output of startx:

Rizz0-Built ~ # startx

You need to create ~/.xinitrc, and put "exec gnome-session" in it. You are now using the system default xinitrc (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc), which is trying to start twm and xterm, and failing because you don't have those installed. Everything is working, but you haven't told X to start gnome.

I forgot to mention, there is not one line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Thought that was a little strange, but I remember someone once saying that I don't need Xorg, so I didn't bother touching it.

You don't usually need any xorg.conf files. Have you followed the instructions in the wiki? Do you have modesetting enabled in your kernel? Have you built the appropriate video driver? Have you configured make.conf correctly?

FrankRizz0,

Code:
[ 1727.102] (II) LoadModule: "ati"
[ 1727.102] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module ati

It looks as if you have an ATI Radeon graphics engine as thats what Xorg tries to load first.
The loading fails, probably because the driver has not been built.
Note, the driver is in two parts, a kernel part and an Xorg part. This message only relates to the Xorg part.

pidsley pointed you to a good resource
