I have installed the latest of everything on an Acer Aspire 772--6208 laptop.

The only problem is the CPU fan behaviour.
The fan *sometimes* starts working at boot for no reason I can understand and will continue to function for the entire time the machine is not restarted.
Other times, after a restart the fan will absolutely NOT turn on, no matter what, resulting in the laptop switching itself off suddenly when a temperature threshold is exceeded.
EDIT: I've tried adding the noapic kernel option and although that seemed to make the fan start the first time I tried it, subsequent reboots still had the same problem. Adding the noapic option seems to have increased the frequency at which the fan turns on; it seems to enable the fan every other boot now.

After reading the various sources on the internet, this apparently means the drivers IS functioning correctly.

Progman3K, I had the same issue with my Acer 5630.
Fan always worked quite loudly after boot,
but laptop often stopped working from overheating because fan was stopped. It was very strange, because after restarting fan started as needed.
I tried all possible options , including laptop mode tools , noapic etc.
But the problem was in the fan itself. I replaced it for ~12$ and problem dissapeared.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.
The fan may have a mechanical problem, but it's not likely:
Originally, the laptop ran Windows 7 without problems for a few years until it began shutting down without warning when under load, increasingly-often.
Technicians opened the case, cleaned the grills and cpu fan, changed the cpu thermal paste.
The fan was deemed OK.
The laptop was then tested with Live-CDs (Windows/linux).
The technician-reported difference was that when booted by Windows, the fan would work and when booted with linux, it would not.
After installing Gentoo, the fan works 1 out of every 8 boots.
However, on a 'lucky' boot, the fan works perfectly for hundreds of hours under every type of workload (see config listed above) until rebooted.
Booting with Knoppix 7.2, the fan works properly every time.
From everything I have read, there are possibilities
- Some have reported a fix by upgrading to BIOS v1.45, the laptop is v1.22
The problem is figuring out how to flash the BIOS because the firmware-installing program is a Windows executable that contains a compressed set of another series of executable files that also require Windows but the laptop is linux-only.
- Change kernel config or kernel version.
