not to sure about the name, but an option to clean /var/tmp/portage and distfiles I think should be in by default.
not a problem to clean it myself, nor do I too often, still, see questions now and then on "can I delete ..."
also, it's a pretty damn quick thing to add |

Not a bad idea really. Maybe 'cleanup' and it could do any other housekeeping chores that might be appropriate. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I would put /var/tmp/portage and /usr/portage/distfiles in a completely different league. Cruft in /var/tmp/portage is usually a result of aborted ebuilds, but source tarballs in /usr/portage/distfiles can often be reused across multiple ebuilds, as -r1, -r2, -r3, etc come out. Coming from Debian, I thought this was a big benefit of Gentoo, because tracking Debian unstable meant lots of big binary upgrades all the time, even when they were working from the same upstream version. With Gentoo, a similar situation would mean all you have to do is pick up the new ebuild during an rsync, and everything else you need to install the software is still there.
Not that I'm trying to pour water on the idea, but I just think there should be a clear distinction between those two directories. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I was under the impression that --autoclean didn't kick in if the ebuild broke in the middle, which is usually how I end up with stuff stuck in /var/tmp/portage. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

man emerge wrote: | This option is automatically enabled for normal users | Considering that, I'm thinking autoclean isn't working completely. If it leaves 'failed' stuff behind on purpose (I'm guessing that is the case) then another option or autoclean setting would be handy. I don't think I've rm'd much out of /var/tmp/portage though, so I'm not overly concerned. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I was actually thinking two diffrent options for cleaning distfiles and tmpfiles, cuz, well, I'm on a fast line, and I'v got a setup to a gentoo server in my country which is fast , so I really don't need the distfiles in. |
