ls -l /usr/bin/java:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 44 Apr 27 10:54 /usr/bin/java -> /usr/libexec/eselect-java/run-java-tool.bash

eselect java-vm list:
Available Java Virtual Machines:
  [1]   icedtea-bin-7  system-vm user-vm

but if firefox goes to a page with with some Java code, it just says "Java is not installed or has been disabled".

If I download jre-7u55-linux-i586.tar.gz, untar it and cp -a jre1.7.0_55/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins this time firefox asks the usual Are you sure? messages then reports The Java plugin has crashed.

So what further steps can I take to get Java working ? I don't really mind if it's icedtea or Oracle.

Teegrins, mounty1!

Just to be sure, since they removed the option from the preferences some version(s) ago (what an “up”date... sigh), how about checking about:config to see if java is actually enabled?

Considering your note about the plug-in crashing in the latter part of your post, I imagine this is not being the problem here, but I thought I'd just make sure! ^^

That is, javascript.enabled in about:config.

Even if it's a looong-shot, I do hope this helps!

Yes, javascript is enabled. But Java != Javascript.

Did you enable USE="nsplugin" for icedtea-bin? And jre is the sun/oracle -jre download? Then the crash is quite sure caused by incompatibility of the java libs (coming from icedtea) and the nsplugin (coming from sun/oracle).

Thanks; you identified the problem.

What happens now with the link http://snipmp3.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fyoutube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DfZ4jGechQXk is that first firefox puts up a block/allow message near the top of the window, then when I click allow, a Swing-like dialog asks permission to run. Then the window shows Java Applet Loaded. Fetching links... with a little graphical 'progress indicator' but it never actually starts the download that it's supposed to.

I've got a problem loading java here on this site:http://www.studybass.com/lessons/bass-scales/one-octave-major-scale/

Replaced icedtea-bin with oracle-jre-bin with the same result.

Solved.
Added the gstreamer use flag to make.conf and use Firefox instead of Firefox-bin and html5 video works as well. I'm happy now.
