Somebody just gave me a Sparc4/85 with only 24MB RAM and 533MB HDD and no cdrom (guess I can connect one externally)
Could any Linux run on this thing without spending? I have another HDD (9GB) but the internal HDD had a special connector.
Really don't care too much about running the latest version, something to learn Linux a bit. I am new to this.

Thanks to anyone who can lead me to more info and help :?

It'll run Linux, but you'll need at least 2GBytes of disc space. The ss4 is SCSI, no IDE. There's an SCA 80pin connector that'll take any standard SCA or SCA2 (will run at ultra speeds only though) disc. You may also have a 50pin SCSI cable in there somewhere.

What kinda disc is your 9Gig?

The HDD is a IBM ultra wide SCSI 3 which should do the job with the SCA adapter. What about the 24MB ram Think that's enough? Or should I try an older version of Gentoo or another distribution?

Thanks

If you've got a SCSI68->SCA rather than SCA->SCSI68 it should be okay... 24MBytes is pushing it, but give it a go...

Now all I need is find the adapter and give it a try.

Thanks

You __could__ use Gentoo, but that may be pushing it a bit...

May I recommend Debian Sparc? You can even install from diskette if I understand correctly. I myself am attempting to get a SPARC station to play with currently.

Thanks for the lead. I suppose that Debian would require less memory if you recommend it then.
